Here's what's potentially troubling about this one: Red Barn products are often sold loose, in bulk treat bins at various pet supply stores. I've seen the boxes they use to re-stock and spotted the brand name on them. Although the recall only includes 3 packs, we know from past recalls that they tend to grow as more products are identified -- if the plant making them was sending out contaminated goods, there's good reason to be suspicious of the other bulk goods too.

The bulk/loose products pose a real risk for cross-contamination: someone's hands are touching them to stock the bin, to put the item in the basket, to check out, and to unpack the shopping bag at home. Every one of those touches is an opportunity to spread salmonella to other surfaces, and to the person with contaminated hands. It means the baskets these loose things touched can be contaminated and transfer infection to other products.

Salmonella can apparently live up to 4 weeks on dry surfaces.

This is a good reminder to sanitize your hands (and your kids' hands...) after leaving the pet supply (or, well, any) store. We all ought to be doing that anyway during this terrible flu season. It's easy to keep a bottle of spray or gel in your purse or the door pocket of the car -- Dr. Bronners makes a spray that smells delightful.
