Rear dew claws - why are some born with them

and some aren't?

After the other dewclaw topic, I emailed my breeder (DDR lines) to see if she removes them. Was told her dogs don't have rear dew claws.

So is it specific lines that don't have them or what?

It's basically a genetic throwback to dogs' ancestors that had five digits on their hindpaws as well as fore. I don't think they're specific to any particular line as they can show up anywhere. If they do show up, most breeders have them removed when the pups are a couple days old. Rear dewclaws are much more susceptible to getting torn since they're usually only attached by ligaments.
My GSD had double dew claws on each hind foot. One pointed up, one down. They were really floppy so I decided to have them removed. She recovered fine except for a minor infection that flared up. It was a bit of a pain having to keep her feet wrapped for a couple weeks, but at least I don't have to worry about them getting torn off now. It ended up costing me about $500 with the surgery, several bandage changes, antibiotics, etc.
