Red is just a tan with rich pigment. Any line from any country can produce tan in varying degrees of pigment richness.

Maybe a picture will help?

Hard to see anything on the small pictures. Was Liberty a rescue? Any Background on him? In the picks he just looks a normal black and tan.

Tan can be so light that it is white. Black and Silver is an official colour when registering a GSD. Mostly found in pet lines. Also, if Mom was a rescue with no history, she could be a mix - so the light colour may be from a completely different source.
