I'm not sure if this post will work - I have been having IT issues in the forum but trying anyway. My neighbor dog sat for me one day last week and gave my dog a rawhide chew. Since then his appetite has seemed to really diminish. His energy level seems a little lower but not lethargic. His poop is a little softer but he is definitely pooping which makes me believe there is no intestinal blockage. No puking or anything. Just not eating as much. For almost a week now. He is drinking water though. I may be wrong but I think this is related to the rawhide. I plan to feed him white rice and chicken for dinner to see if he will take it but any other suggestions? Pepto? Pepcid? Thanks ya'll.

I would still be worried about the rawhide causing problems. If your dog is not significantly better by Monday I would go to the Vet for some x-rays. If he gets worse go to the Emergency Vet. I have had a few scares with potentially blocked intestines, you don't want to wait too long to get things diagnosed.

I also would still be worried, especially if he was fine prior. I agree with the above posters, he could have a partial blockage, don't wait, I'd rather be save than sorry

get him checked out. Partial blockages can happen which can result in the symptoms you've mentioned. Its always recommended that the dog not be allowed to have a whole lot of water after chewing on rawhide because the water can cause the rawhide to expand in the stomach/intestines. Our dogs get rawhide but never have water for at least 4 hours afterward. Get your boy checked.

I offered him chicken and rice for the past three meals --- he ate it all. So he is eating now but with less gusto and excitement than normal. Am going to take him to the vet just to be on the safe side. Thank you for the feedback!

Rawhide can take a WHILE to digest. My last dog used to eat it like candy, no problem but current one sounds like yours. It is likely digested but could have irritated your pup's insides so you have another WHILE to put up with it.
Good old chicken and rice should help, more rice than chicken. What has worked for
me is putting some water in the kibble. After it soaks a bit she thinks she is getting canned.

thank ya'll for the posts. i took him to the vet last night and everything checked out in the overall general exam. paddyd, the vet said what you stated, that her though is that the raw hide irritated his stomach lining. her other thought is that there may still be an undigested piece of rawhide sticking around but she said that is less likely since there is no vomiting and since he is pooping like normal.

she suggested that he take one pepcid a day and she prescribed a prescription version of pepto bismol.

so we will see how this goes. i will say that last night i gave offered him the food that he'd been normally eating (taste of the wild praire) and he walked away. i then offered him a small bit of orijen and he basically inhaled it. perhaps this isn't raw hide related at all but just that i need to switch food?!?

My dogs eat rawhide all the time and are just fine, though some dogs can't eat it at all. So don't panic just because of the rawhide. Be aware of it.

Hi Orange Leash,
Can you tell me how long did he take to recover from this problem? And did you get through the root cause of it? My 4 month old puppy having the same problem. He had a raw hide, its been a week he is not eating his regular food. Lost so much of weight also.

Welcome to the forum Pepper!
Might i suggest you start your own thread in the puppy or health section, as this one is over 10yrs old and the OP is no longer active.
