You will get different messages on this one. And I think you're right about them not digesting well. If you want to try rawhide, it should be done with supervision. I used to give them to Kayla. Had no negative effect for us. Stopped some time ago.

Now she gets bully sticks from time to time. But even those are with supervision.

ever notice how rawhide puffs up once the dogs been chewing on it awhile? well if they swallow large enough pieces that havent already expanded - the pieces will expand in their stomach which can cause problems. my family has never had any issue with our dogs, but once i learned of this precaution a few years back, that was enough for me to switch to pressed rawhilde, which is said to be safer.

I used to use the pressed rawhide bones and pig ears, but both caused diarrhea. Now I use marrow bones. When the raw is off, I clean them and keep them as chew toys, or re-stuff them.

^i've found marrow bones keep my pups teeth in better shape too!

they're cheaper than (petshop) rawhide too. i get 6 of them for about 2 bucks at the grocery store.

oh yea, we give him pigs ears too. We have marrow bones too ( i think that is what they are anyway ) and he likes those well too.

my baby is spoiled, anytime I see something that catches my eye I usually just have to get it for him LOL.

He is handsome! Looks alot like my Chaos....

I give my dogs the pressed rawhides sometimes; Chaos chews on them, but Misha will just go bury hers and then will get upset when it gets un-buried and chewed up

Bully sticks don't last very long around here, either.

Something else used to give Kayla. Seems there's concern/stories about pieces breaking off of these that end up with sharp edges and being swallowed. I can see that happening with hte hooves, I stopped giving these to her.

We gave rawhide a zillion years ago. That is until we had a dog choke on one. He got a piece caught in his throat and got to take a trip to the E-Vet.

Same with hooves. I had a dog (GSD) get one wedged sideways in the roof of her mouth. (It got stuck between her upper teeth.) After managing to get it out without getting myself bitten, I never gave them again. (Ever try prying something out of a dogs mouth when they are FREAKING out? NOT fun.

They were definitely an "in the garage or out back" treat.

Bully sticks can put out a certain "aroma" as well. But for now they stay a part of Kayla's treat inventory.

I don't allow the Hooligans to have rawhide bones due to the choking hazards either. While I never had to go to the ER, I had a couple close calls where I had to stick my hand down a dog's throat to pull a slimy piece out using the tips of my fingers.

I will not give rawhide bones like you are giving..When Kayla was a pup I gave her the ones you are feeding, a piece of the end came off and got stuck in her throat..Scared me to death. Thank god I was able to get it out of her throat.
