Too Late??? Why are there so many great GSDs in KY?
I post the GSDs that have been posted on KY Central on this forum b/c there is no GSD rescue in KY.
It's not specific to KY. As we know, thousands of good dogs die in shelters in most states, incl. KY. A mass killing that IS preventable if only more people took action.

This looked like a healthy, young dog. She had a friendly expression looking at the camera. One would have had to meet her, but most likely she had no major issues. Unless a rescue stepped up last night, she is dead now.

Mission Statement:
Estill County Animal Shelter is a County-operated shelter in rural Kentucky. Dogs are held 5-7 days before we euthanize. We hold as long as we possibly can. All owner turn -ins can be euthanzied when they are brought in but we try to give them that same chance at life as the stray.
Because we are such high volume and serve 5 counties, we cannot hold a dog very long for rescue. We will always try to do everything we can to help out, but understand that we have a 25 kennel capacity, we always have to make room for dogs coming into the shelter. Animals are euthanized EVERY week on Thursday morning at 5:00 am.

Adoption: Fee: $25. That includes a 7-way shot, license, and rabies (if old enough). Adoption fees can be made by credit card to our paypal account [email protected] but the fee is $28, to cover Paypal's fees. If you are interested in adopting a dog from the shelter, the $25 pull/adoption fee MUST be paid ($28 for paypal) and arrangements made for the dog to be OUT of the shelter before the dog is considered safe.
For Information regarding pull fees, dogs, policy, general questions, or to adopt, please contact [email protected]

Rescue: Reputable rescues are always welcomed. Pull fees ($25.00) can be made to our paypal account [email protected] but the fee is $28, to cover Paypal's fees. Some vet services are available for additional costs, including spay/neuter, heartworm test, and rabies vaccine.
Transport:
For Information regarding rescues, puppies, cats, transport assistance, & boarding, contact [email protected]
Boarding: For Information regarding rescues, puppies, cats, transport assistance, & boarding, contact [email protected]
Contact (Shelter): Sandie: Phone: 606-723-3587 Email: [email protected]
Sponsoring: If you have room in your heart, but not in your home for one of our pets, you can sponsor their spay/neuter fee, which would greatly increase their chances of finding a forever home. If you'd like to sponsor a dog or cat, $50-$65 is usually all it takes to get one of our animals altered. A $25 sponsor fee will be enough to save most animals by allowing them to get to rescues. If you're interested in sponsoring one of our animals, please email Sandie at [email protected] or call Sandie at 606-723-3587 to see what is needed to sponsor a pet. Estill County Animal Shelter

There are some German Shepherd rescues in Kentucky! I forwarded her info to one last night. I am in Cincinnati, a little over two hours away. There is also a nice, older black male shepherd in this shelter.

OMG! I just viewed this forum yesterday, must have been before Breeze was posted. She was beautiful and something about her reminded me of my white GSD I just lost. Such a tragedy!!!

My "Why are there so many great GSDs in KY?" was more of a rhetorical question. Along with me lamenting the fact that they are so far away from MD.

I don't know much about KY, except it has what like 120 counties and many rural areas? There aren't a lot of resources for rescues - like local people to evaluate, pull, temp. foster or transport. I know dogs everywhere die in shelters on a daily basis. It just seems to pain me more, when it is a young, highly adoptable GSD.

RIP Sweet Breeze

Oh, my answer was rhetorical, too! I know that you are aware of what is happening, Jan, and that you are acting on the knowledge. Let's move to KY!

It's maddening that she was pts. And the many mutts that died with her, too.

Whoever can, please foster. Foster homes save lives. And funds for temporary boarding when time is of the essence.
