Hello! Our 1 year old has licked a patch of fur off near the back leg. He keeps licking it and making the patch bigger. The skin is red and raw. Any ideas on what it is and how to treat it?
Looks like a reaction to an allergy that many dogs here have had. There's a few good topics here that address those mystery hot spots. I'll link to 'em if I can find them, good luck.
some dogs will shave the hair from one side of the tail
some dogs will over groom and the appearance will be like
a scultped carpet - chewed hair just to the under coat
clean the area up -- Vetericyn -- (not hydrogen peroxide)
review diet --
for some reason dogs with obsessive licking are helped with the addition
of lecithin in the diet . You can buy lecithin - preferably sunflower sourced -
in granules or capsules.
Hot spot. Time for the cone of shame. Continued licking will make it worse and secondary staph infections are common with hot spots. Keep it clean and dry. Vetericyn spray can help with healing. Or a little organic unrefined coconut oil. Watch for increased redness, oozing, crusting then it's a trip to the vet.
If it doesn't improve with keeping it clean and dry (no licking) then an antibiotic spray and/or steroid may be needed.
