I've heard it's a good idea to have raised dog bowls. Something not so low. Is this really a good idea? Or not necessary?

Not necessary.
The newer research actually says it may cause bloat.

If I had a disabled/aging dog who had an impediment to eating at ground level, I would consider it. I'm no expert, by any means, but common sense tells me that wolves and dogs have eaten off the ground for centuries. It just seems more natural that way. Raised feeders feel like a marketing idea targeting anxious owners more than anything else to me.

I mean, I don't see a pack making a kill and then looking around for a rock of the appropriate height to spread it on before they devour it ;)

Fiona eats and drinks out of elevated bowls. Her pack didn't look for a rock, but this pack leader was sick of her digging in her bowls.

Lollol!! That's the laugh I was craving, Cheyanna. And you gave us a realistic voice, as always.

I think what Cheyanna is saying is that it won't kill 'em, either way ;)
