We are on day two here of POURING rain and at least one more. What do you do with your GSD to get them tired out inside?

Obedience sessions
Tracking games
Food/chewing (kong, bones, bully sticks, food dispensing toys)
Tugging and ball

We still play in the rain - mud washes off! :)

Not me so much that objects to being in the rain. Both my dogs hate it. Hard to get them to go out to even go to the bathroom.

I know a lot of people tough it out even when its pouring but my dogs do not like being outside when its pouring anymore....a little rain is ok but when its pouring no way. It doesn't necessarily tire him out, but I practice commands with Mac in the house to at least stimulate him mentally. I'll hide his treats and have him search for them...that kinds of thing.

i've walked my dog in the rain. you can train indoors
and do reinforcement training. "find it" (hide something
and send your dog to find it) is a good indoors
activity. you could prop open the front door
and teach or reinforce no door dashing. sometimes
i'll roll a ball down the hallway or throw a tee shirt
(that i have rolled up and held with rubber bands)
down the hallway. i taught my dog to picks things
up i drop something. i'll ask my dog to "heel" and then
we'll walk around the house while i drop my wallet, his leash,
news paper (rolled and held with rubber bands), a ball or kong toy.
when i was teaching my dog to go to his crate on command
i did that a lot of rainy days. hanging out on the sofa together
is always fun on a rainy day.

I train almost every day with at least two of the puppers...

So when it rains as hard as it was yesterday, it makes for a great excuse to take a break and just hang out! Dogs seem to enjoy it too, they curl up in their beds and snooze or chew on their bones.

I find that taking *short* breaks from training actually seems to help them learn better, especially my Smitty dog. Train, let him be for a day or even two and he seems even more into the training the next time.

Sometimes we'll go visit the pet store or a friend's house that also has a dog. Mine hates going out in the rain too so he goes stir crazy inside, along with the toddler lol
