Well, we made it through the 7+ hour drive home! Rafi was pretty darn confused and Chama was pretty darn mad that he had to ride in the back with her despite me taking them together for a hike yesterday. But I distracted her by throwing treats into her bed and then he jumped in for his treats! I stopped twice and took them for little walks. The second time Chama was very frisky and played with Rafi a little. Rafi did throw up once (but he cleaned that up right away!
) and had many little anxiety barking and howling fits. It was hard for him because I have a pickup truck with a topper and so the dogs are in back by themselves and that made him nervous. Plus Chama made it very clear that he had to stay on HIS bed!
A dog loving friend of mine (she has a Brightstar gsd) came over and helped us get settled in at home. He has now met Cleo and she told him who was boss. And Chama is fine with him in the house as long as food isn't involved. He is having a big nap now because he barely slept on the drive, poor guy. He and Chama played in the backyard when we got home. I am going to take him for a long walk now before the fireworks start!
I will post pictures tomorrow. He is SUCH a nice dog!
He is settling in so well! Did I mention how SMART he is! He learns everything very quickly and just wants to please the 3 females in his household! Chama is doing really well with him. We (she and I) just have to teach him to slow down in the house because he has knocked her over a couple of times rushing around.
He slept well last night. His foster dad allowed him on the bed so he did try to get up there when I turned the lights out. I told him Off and put him back on the dog futon and then he tried the other side of the bed so I took him back over to the dog futon again. Then he got it and decided to sleep in his crate so he would have a better view of me.
He woke me up at 9:30 this morning with kisses. What a good boy!
Here he is out on the deck this morning. As you can see I need to fatten him up a little!
I started him on his supplements today and I am defrosting some chicken for him to start him on raw until his immune system gets better. Then I'll give him Orijen.
Ruby, his foster dad started crying when Rafi was loaded into the truck! He is such a sweet young man. We are going to keep in touch. He and his dog must be missing Rafi today!
What a stunning coat and a dear, sweet, intelligent face! He looks like a fantastic friend. He is so lucky to have YOU, too! Congratulations Ruth.. congratulations sweet Rafi!
Ok, everyone, now that you see these pictures, what do you think he is? Red sable? Red shepherd? Gsd x Malinois? Gsd x Golden?
Personality wise:
He is very submissive and gives everyone he meets kisses.
He is very smart and learns thing almost immediately.
He has moderate ball drive.
He loves to play with other dogs.
He is submissive to cats.
He has a high herding drive.
He is not at all protective.
He is cautious in new situations but not fearful.
He's gorgeous! I'm thinking there's some Mal in there too, something about the head shape. Mostly GSD though, I'd guess. Whatever he is, he sounds like a doll!
I am going to modify to HIGH ball drive. We played fetch the frozen ball in the yard this morning. He gathered up the balls in the yard and took turns with them. He was very upset to leave one behind and seemed to be trying to figure out how to get two in his mouth.
He has been collecting all the balls in the house today. Turns out there are balls under almost all of my furniture! There is also dust under there! Who knew...or wanted to know?
AND, he already knows where he lives! Last night on the walk he started pulling really hard when we got to our street so I gave him a loose leash to see if he could find our house. When he got to our driveway he dragged me into the yard.
The only issues so far are that he's food obsessed (understandable because he was starving for a while) and he has a bit of separation anxiety (also understandable because he was dumped). I am doing short periods with him in the crate while I go in and out of the room, give him treats, etc.
And Chama is funny! I unearthed a bone from under the sofa and she rushed over and took it from me! She hasn't chewed on a bone since Kai was alive. So Rafi is definitely good for her!
