My gsd is 6 months at the moment. I have a 5yr old female cocker spaniel that is the dominant one, she is fixed, but I was wondering when my gsd goes into heat will I have to keep them seperate or the are ok being near one another?

That is entirely up to you and your dogs. There's no one way that intact females will behave in heat towards each other. There's no one way that any two dogs will interact with each other at any time.

If you start to see issues, separate them. If you don't, go from there.

Your young female might get nervous and irritable at night. If you noticed this sort of behaviour it could be better to separate them just for night time, because the other one wouldn't let her sleep.

I say keep a watchful eye on them , some dogs act a little wacky when they go into heat my girl is not the same she just acts a little off ... kind of like us women so just make sure your there to supervise them and if anything separate them ...
