Prong Question

Did not want to steal Carole's thread.

Had a question about size of prong. I have always used the small prong for all my dogs and have never had a problem with it holding them. But I wonder if that is too small. Havoc is about 75 pounds now and I wonder if I need a medium. Don't like the large ones, I think the prongs are just too big.

Thanks.....

I have had to switch to the medium prong because I found with the small prong it kept flipping inside out on me the few times I had to give a stiffer correction to my dog for "flipping me the bird" which she does on a semi regular basis.

My medium prong is the quick release one. I only use the quick release function for taking the prong off because it is a major pain to put on that way.
when i first put tyson on a prong, my trainer and i talked about how smaller prongs can trigger aggression, anxiety, and other things. pretty much telling me that its important to find the right size. tyson is roughly 65-70lbs (havent weighed him in a while)

i've got a 3.25mm prong

he receives correction very well and i dont often have to and if i do its only a slight tug.
Interesting Steve I had never heard that but it does make sense. Thanks.
I think that's a subject that is very much up for debate.

Some trainers and handlers prefer to use the small size prong collars and purchase extra links to extend the collar to fit their dogs. The idea here is that there are more prongs touching the dog's neck, and there is less of a "gap" where the chain of the prong lays flat, which would allow you to give a more effective and more even correction.

Some people prefer to use the larger size prong collars because they don't want to buy extra links, have concerns about too many prongs correcting the dog, are experiencing issues with the smaller size prongs and their dog's coat, or just think that the smaller size prong just doesn't look right on their dog.

I have the Medium-sized Herm Sprenger prong collar (I guess it's the 3.25mm one), but looking back, I think I probably should have gotten the smaller one. With Abby's dainty little neck, the chain takes up about a third of the neck and the prongs two-thirds. With the smaller size, I would get a better fit. But as we don't use it a whole lot anymore, I haven't gone back to get a different size.

I use both the micro and the medium. Depends on the dog.
I also use mediums. All "large" collars are WAY too big for my dogs and if I removed enough prongs to fit my dogs the collar would only have like 5/6 prongs. I like having more prongs because the correction/pressure is less, since there are more prongs for it to be dispersed over.

I don't fit my prongs quite as high as Leerburg, it just doesn't work that well with their coats. It's more than halfway up though.
I have the small and medium, medium for Kacies longer coat, otherwise she would get her fur pulled, tangled in the small one. I haven't used the prongs for a few months, lately just the no-slips have worked pretty well.
I have the small Herm Sprenger prong and just buy extra links when needed.

I use the 3.25mm on my serial forger and have tried sizing down to get a better fit like the page on Leerburg. It did agitate my dog more and I found he started growling at me during a correction (no difference in level compared to 3.25mm medium size).
