When I talked to the foster mom of the dog I am adopting, she suggested for a food, to look for a premium food under a cheeper name, for example she said Iams? (not sure) has a food under another brand, sold in Costco. Well we don't have costcos here, and that confuses me anyhow...how do you know if its a premium food like Iams under a different name? I was looking at Nutri Source Lamb meal and rice, and Adult dog chicken and rice OR Diamond one of their new Natural foods, like lamb meal and rice or chicken and rice. Not sure, I want to ask 1st what exactly he eats, if it is one of those "premium under another label" I will for sure have to look for something else......What do you all think of these brands and have any of you hear of this Label thing??

Diamond does make Taste of the Wild. It is a good food and less expensive than the other premium brands. Keep in mind that when we talk about premium brands on this board we are talking about foods that run between $40 and $60 per 30 pound bag. Because they lack fillers you do end up feeding less of them.

Why feed a food not manufactured by the company on the bag?

If it is nothing more than a marketing company how can they guarantee what is in it?

If a company can afford to sell a off brand name with virtually the same ingredient list at a lower cost than why pay more for the name brand food?

I started my puppy on Blue Buffalo which I understand is made my the Diamond company. It seems pretty good so far but I am always on the look out for better foods that I can afford.

"premium food under a different name" -- I actually think that there are very few of those.

Most might be manufactured by the same company, but that doesn't mean that they are the same food, formulation, quality ingredients, etc. The dog food company specifies to the manufacturer how the food should be made, right?

Good question.

By looking at the bags, Diamond Natural, chicken soup and Kirkland (kirkwood) look about the same. But Blue Buffalo and Taste of the Wild are completely different. I'm not sure what the marketing strategy is all about, or which foods are manufactured in the same plant.

It is all confusing to me too, I will get more details when the foster mom gets back from vacation. In the meanwhile I found this: (I apologize if it is already in the forum?)

Start with a grade of 100: Foods already graded are at the bottom of this
email. Please add yours to the list before passing on.

1) For every listing of 'by-product' , subtract 10 points
2) For every non-specific animal source ('meat' or 'poultry', meat, meal or
fat) reference, subtract 10 points
3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
4) For every grain 'mill run' or non-specific grain source, subtract 5
points
5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five
ingredients (i.e. 'ground brown rice', 'brewer's rice', 'rice flour' are all
the same grain), subtract 5 points
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats
in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points
9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points
10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2
points
11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic
to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to
wheat), subtract 2 points
14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to
beef), subtract 1 point
15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
Extra Credit:
1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5
points
3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points
7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points
8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points
10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first
one; count 'chicken' and 'chicken meal' as only one protein source, but
'chicken' and '' as 2 different sources), add 1 point
13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are
pesticide-free, add 1 point

Yes, they give the manufacturing company their recipe. Very few dog foods have their own manufacturing plants. Orijen and Merrick are the only two I can think of right now.

So, does anyone have a list of what foods are manufactured by who?

I don't think this is updated but it can give a general idea maybe:
http://www.thepetfoodlist.com/manufacturers.htm

Oh-it's over a year old. I think they do like a musical chair type thing with these dog foods, but it might be a good basis in which to try to track down where the food comes from. Like you could say well...in 2007 you were manufactured by X and now are you still with them or have you moved to Y.
