The pictures show a GSD buyt the article says a malinois. I know BSO has a lot of malinois, so it could have been a mali.

It's sad to see a K9 killed in the line of duty, it is the ultimate sacrafice. I don't know if the dog was part of my wife's (unofficial) schutzhund club or not, I think there may be a K9 or two in there.

I do not know about the laws in Miami-Dade county (where the shooting took place) but it was Broward county sheriff's office and the incident started in Broward county. If they go by Broward laws, the suspect if facing murder of a police officer chargers (I don't know if it is the same in Miami-Dade).

The dog in the picture IS a Mal.

Yeah, they changed it. They might have had a stock photo earlier. Another site (Local10) also showed a picture of a mal.

Not a bad looking mal for a working line mal.

It is reported that the handler is taking this very hard, too. Not suprised, he probabaly had Oozi for at least 5 years.

FL Statutes would cover the killing no matter the location. Our statutes are pretty rough for interfering, harming, inflecting permanent disability, or killing a SAR, a Fire Dog, a LE K-9 or Police Horse. I believe it is FL Statute 843.19 but I don't have a book in front of me right now. Penalities are even stiffer for individuals with a history of felonies. Specific charge & degree would be dictated by the State Atty's Office.

Contrary to very popular belief killing a LE K-9 is not the same as killing a (Human) Police Officer.

Degrees of Felony in FL:
Capital felony - punishable by death
Life felony - punishable by a lifetime in prison
1st degree felony - punishable by up to 30 years in prison
2nd degree felony - punishable by up to 15 years in prison
3rd degree felony - punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

This is so sad. Run free brave boy!!!
I rescued a retired police GSD and have a soft spot for them.
I hope the person who killed him will face murder charges.
I wonder whether the dog was wearing a vest and if he did, would it have made a difference.
G
It isn't going to help the scumbag much that he shot the dog in front of a hospital. The only place worse would be a school.

I hope he gets a long, long stretch.
Gosh, this is so sad, I feel sorry for his partner.

Rest in Peace K9 Oozi!!!

That hospital doesn't have a trauma center so he had to go to another one.

Charges have been pressed:
Quote:He has been charged with aggravated assault with a motor vehicle on a law enforcement officer; aggravated fleeing and eluding; resisting an officer with violence; and principal in the death of a police dog, which is a felony, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.
It is a felony but not capital.
