No, but I sure tried for a few days. I gave up when she didn't show any interest. :(

Well hopefully someone could give us some guidance!!!!:)
I've taught all my dogs to do it... It's really easy :D
After they learn "down", I just bait their head to the ground with yummy treats until their ear touches the floor (sometimes you have to tip them poer yourself) and they get it in about 5 tries.

thank you I will certainly try it!
Have you tried clicker trainering yet with MMM? That clearly marks the behaviour that you want and speeds up the process of learning.
We taught Quinn the play dead trick just as Jax's Mom describes except we called it "go to sleep". We added in a hand signal we made up to reinforce the command because Quinn seems to respond really well to voice coupled with visual cues.

We would love to try clicker training but the only place that teaches it is Pet mart and they have a bad reputation in our area. We both have 0 experience with clicker!

How is Qwinn doing? Your pic of him still makes us smile!!!!
Here's a thread about it http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum/training-theory-methods/142224-how-clicker-train.html
I don't think you need to do classes with it really. There are lots of sites online about clicker training also. Clickers are cheap - about $6 at Global Pet Foods. Get one and give it a try!
Mr. Q. is fine. He is just back from a week's sleepover with my daughter while I was on holiday. He's totally pooped after a week of keeping up with my daughter's dog, Kenya, lol!
One trick to add to it is to get your dog to "play dead" from any position (sit, stand, or down) and also to get them to do it while they are moving (walking at heel for example). And also of course under heavy distraction - i.e. at a dog show or in a store. gets a lot of comments then!
Any youtube videos out there that show how this would be done? I've searched but I can't find any, there are bunch of them showing the final product but not the training.
I clicker trained Buddy to do it. Clicker training is super easy! First you have to "charge" the clicker. Just click and treat, click and treat, over and over, until you are in a different room and you click and your dog either snaps his head around to look for you or comes running. Then you know that he has connected the click to a treat. Then you start to have fun with it! Start with a command he knows. Tell him "Sit" the second his behind hits the floor, click and treat. He'll soon realize that the click sound means "you did good! I owe you a treat for that!"

I trained Buddy very similar to Jax's mom. First Buddy was in a "down", then I baited him with a treat, in front of his nose, but a little bit to the side of his face, so he had to turn his head. Once he smelled the treat and turned his head, I moved the treat toward the back of his head, and he rolled on to his side to try to keep the treat in view (or in smell, lol.) As soon as he was on his side, I clicked and gave him a treat. It only takes a few times of this baiting for the dog to get "if I roll on my side, I get a treat." Then he was practically throwing himself down on his side, lol, to get the click and treat. After he gets laying on his side down pat, don't click and treat until his head is down (just bait his head down with a treat once he's on his side.) The second his head is down, click and treat. Then move to not clicking until he has his head down for a few seconds. Then move to not clicking until he has his head down for a few seconds and the rest of him is completely still. (Buddy still has a hard time with the completely still thing, lol!) As soon as the dog is doing the whole trick all on his own, then you can add a name to the trick. Once you say the name of the trick and the dog is doing it, you can remove the clicker.

You can teach him w/out a clicker, too, it's just that clicker makes the training go faster. W/out a clicker, do the same steps, but only treat, don't click first. ;)

Instead of "play dead" our word for that trick is "chill." It's so funny. We say, "Buddy, chill!" and he throws himself down on his side. He throws himself down so fast that I sometimes worry he's going to hurt himself, lol!! It's one of my favorite tricks that he does.

Hope this helps! Have fun!!!
