I use Nutro Max Adult Nutrition right now, and my GSD just doesnt seem interested in it. He eats it when he gets really hungry but he has been throwing up here lately and I think it because of the food. The only way it will eat it usually is if I put an egg in it but is this healthy to do this everytime he eats? I am on a budget so I can't go crazy with dog food but is there anything else anyone would suggest.

id second the canidae if it doesnt give your dog any problems. its probably the lowest cost super premium food. imo, nutro isnt too great anyway. you can get canidae 40 lb bags (of the all life stages formula) often at around $35 at pets supplies plus, and at 468 cals/cup probably will need to feed less than the nutro.

here is a canidae store locator in case you are interested:

I too would suggest Canidae as you can get a 40 pound bag of food for around $32-34 and Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul might be a good choice too. I think it's around the same price as the Canidae. Not sure where you are located but both of these can be found at Pet Supplies Plus.

From looking at the ingredients in Nutro Max and the price point you are wanting to stay in I would look into Purina ONE and Purina Pro Plan. They are about in that same price range as the Nutro Max.

I have no problems at all with mine on Purina Pro Plan. But same price range as Canidae, so it would be your decision.

Not everyone can afford the grain free foods........ bigger companies don't always mean bad and little companies don't always mean good.....

both pro plan and purina one have corn based products in the list of ingredients and purina one also has wheat. None of my dogs have not done well with products with either corn or wheat in them.

Same here. Heidi's been eating Nutro Lamb and Rice since we got her, but when we got a new bag, she got really sick (throwing up, loss of appetite, lethargic, horrible breath, etc.). Of course, I'm not 100 percent sure that it's the Nutro that made her sick, but I don't want to take any chances. She did get better when she stopped eating it, but now I have no idea what to feed her. I've been looking online, but it's very hard to find out where the foods are actually made and packaged. I'm not ready to go the raw food route yet, but I'd like to find a safe and healthy dry food that is not packaged in China and/or by a big conglomerate like Menu Foods.

Thank you Kris for mentioning that b/c that is so true ... not everyone can afford to spend $45 plus bucks on a bag of food. So, therefore we have to do the best we can with what we have.

My suggestions for the Purina ONE and Pro Plan was b/c of what WhiteGSD2008 is paying for the Nutro Max, as they stated there is a budget to stick too. Not all ONE has wheat in it - the Sensitive Systems does not. It does have the corn but the Nutro Max contains both the corn and wheat so maybe the dog is okay on those ingredients.

LuvourGSs ... do you not want to feed Canidae? You can always do Solid GOld, Natural Balance, Nature's Recipe ... etc.

My response earlier was directed to the person who started this thread b/c they are feeding Nutro Max which contains corn and wheat and the price point that they are paying for the Nutro Max. So, I suggest ONE and Pro Plan b/c those brands are around the same price point and have some of the same ingredients.

its dogfoodanalysis.com

its not the dog food bible. (there are a great deal of resources regarding dog food nutrition out there) but its an easy way to look at and compare many high quality foods and their ingredients, mineral contents, and calories.

for example, id venture to say that every 5 or 6 star food does not have any corn in it.

also, to luvour:

canidae has no corn and is less than a dollar/pound at most places, which is pretty cheap for a good quality kibble these days.

Thanks !

Looked at the rating for canidae & liked what I saw ! Bad thing........with the store locator, closest one is 30 or so mins away.

Would love to find a food that Petsmart or Tractor Supply carries.

What kind of canidae do people us ? Do they have like a lg. breed type of food ?

the canidae all life stages is probably their most used formula. they dont really make a "puppy" food or "large breed" food. the all life stages is very well suited for a large breed puppy or adult and i know many lg breed dog owners use this food. personally, i would drive pretty far to get a higher quality food than what petsmart sells. i have read somewhere that some tractor supplies stores carry taste of the wild (grain free). its cheap for a grain free, but likely more than canidae.
