So I got Athena's X-Rays back today and she has some HD. I have her six month and one year X-Rays and you can tell the difference. What is your opinion on these? The vet wants her to take Adequan injections for it. Any suggestions on foods or joint supplements to manage it?

Wow, the difference is amazing!

I'd just go with keeping your pup lean and fit and using the appropriate supplements. Good muscle tone can really take the pressure off the joint.

Adequan is very good....the hips aren't horrible, I would ask to have them sent to OFA for an official evaluation

Well it is dissapointing but It could be worse. She will still live a happy life we will just have to manage it. Now I need to look in to what the best suppliments/diet are. Luckily she is slim with good musle mass. I just need to keep her in shape. I am glad I have pet insurance because the Adaquan can get pretty expensive!

That isn't a very good x-ray. Her stifles are a little turned out which makes her acetabulums have a shadow to them, which can often create the illusion of hip problems when the truth is that the x-ray isn't actually going to show you what you need to see!

I can bring up x-rays of one of my dogs if you would like a comparison. :) I can show you hips that should get at least a good and ones that are truly HD - on a dog who was about 7.5 years of being dysplastic.

The best thing I did was an ortho vet sent me to a canine physical therapist who help me set up a stretching and exercise plan. I did not do the ongoing water treadmill that she suggested at $$$ ongoing but I did water walking, hill walking and did keep her (Cyra) lean and fit and she never had a real problem ... maybe around 9 she started getting a little stiff but then I lost her do hemangiosarcoma well before the hips gave her real problems.

We started Adequan at 6 months (yes it is pretty expensive so lucky you) It has worked so well for us I still use it every month. My vet gives a little extra than what is recommended. Ive read some reviews where people have said it didnt work for them, and others said it has. so maybe each dog is different. But give it a try and see if it works for you. I didnt notice much of a difference until maybe the 4th shot.

I am also curious about how far out of heat she was. Things can be a little loosey goosey during the cycle and right after. They really do not look that bad, and if she did just come out of heat, they may improve over the course of the next year, if you take them when she is in the middle -- 3 months after her cycle. Maybe.

She was spayed six months before this xray.
