When we brought Diesel to board and train for two weeks, our trainer, who also breeds, and shows GSD noticed Diesel favors one hip more than the other. He also has cow hocking in his back legs. They said he kinda walks like a clumsy great dane puppy, and I should get his hips checked.

I was curious at what age I should do this, he just turned 1 year in July, and I thought about getting him tested this fall when his shots are due. Any opinions?

SV does stays at one year. We're you planning on sending them to OFA? Or just for your own info? Either way you should make sure you only go to a recommended vet so you know you'll get good xrays.

Doesn't need OFA or SV x-rays unless he may be bred. OFA doesn't accept x-rays until age 2.
He may just be a clumsy cow hocked GSD, many are as puppies. I'd take him to a vet well versed in orthopedics for an exam and imaging, if warranted, and not worry about OFA's.
