I'm not sure if this is the right place but here we go.

I just picked up a rescue/possible foster to adopt border collie. He's a drug dog washout and has spent most of his life in a kennel. He seems really sweet but is definitely skittish. I've worked with BCs before so I'm used to their quirks.

Avoidance seems to be his go-to way of coping. I've dealt with dogs like this but I was wondering if anyone else has any experiences or tips that they would be willing to share?

I would let him avoid -- a 2-week shut-down can do a world of good for a dog like this, esp. one used to being kenneled. He'll be able to absorb the rhythm of the house, and see how your dogs live, and process how this new environment works, on his own time.
