We have 4 cats. We just adopted a GSD puppy about a month ago. He's 16 weeks now. We have been letting him out to interact with the cats. Of course, he wants to play and they just want him to leave them alone.

How long will it take to get to the point where they can all be in the same space without him trying to chase them when they walk past?

Right now, the cats can hang out, but if they try to go to the room where their food/water/cat box is, the dog tries to chase them! And he wanders around bugging them, trying to play, so there is a ton of hissing and swatting.

I just want everyone to coexist peacefully!

LOL love this.. We got our GSD pup when he was 7 weeks old and our cat which is 18 pds is 8 .. so of course He didn't like that . Hissing and chasing .. our GSD is now 4 months old and 43 pds. and the cat still rules the house. He wants to play with him but no way. BUT, the cat still wants to be around him.. It will happen eventually. When the dog gets alittle older not so much a puppy anymore calms down. Cats usually are ok with it and they wanna sniff and come around more. BUT remember they were there first and will always be the ruler of the house. I'm just glad my cat doesn't have front claws lol.

I have a puppy that I have to manage around a cat as well. Learning "leave it" and applying it to bugging the cat as well as other things helps some. I don't let the puppy harrass either the cat or the old dog. Until the puppy learns impulse control I would either baby gate off the room that the cats use or leash the puppy when the cats are around. You don't want the puppy to get in the habit of chasing the cats.

Thanks. The dog is gated in our bedroom most of the time, but I let him out for certain periods so that they can all get used to each other. I guess I just have to wait!

LOL Yep cats and dogs. Hubs, my sons cat, hated Emma at first. he did not appreciate the new puppy trying to play.

A 6 months, Emma learned how to play nice and now they are pretty good buds. Of course the cat know how to end the play session :crazy:.

Its funny when Hubs will walk up and rub against Emma's chest, and when Emma puts her nose down to lick him, Hubbs swats it and off they go

It just takes time.
