We bought a 6month old AKC GSD named Apollo that was left in a 10x10 kennel with 4 other pups his whole life. When we got him he was skin and bones very underweight and lethargic. We have had him for 3 weeks now and he has opened up a lot him and my wife have bonded a lot and he’s taken a little more to her because he is with her all day. He has obviously been abused he is very skittish but he is great with my 2 year old son and the seller said his daughters were with him a lot so I assume that’s why he’s ok with my son in his face all the time trying to give kisses. He is not food or toy driven by any means I don’t think he ever had treats or toys.. Apollo will not recognize his name though? He has learned sit once he finally figured out what a treat was the other day but it took him almost 3 minutes to eat a small treat because his jaws are so weak I’m guessing. He will just look at you and walk away if we’re in the yard but even inside he won’t even look up to his name. We’ve never bought a puppy over 8 weeks and I don’t know if it’s just him getting used to life here or he possibly has a hearing problem? But I think his hearing is fine anytime he hears a noise he is very good at alerting. Please give me your opinions on how to teach him his name and maybe fix his broken past? Our other shepherd storm was always very active and fast to learn everything she’s got a very high prey drive and loves to play fetch and search but he wants nothing to do with it he’s very calm and just lingers around all day.
