I only ever used the fur saver for specific situations (training, leash walking) - never for an everyday collar to wear all the time. I always felt that with its big open loops and ability to tighten up, it was an accident waiting to happen. Plus, I got my fingers caught in those loops more than once - ouch!
You may want to try a rolled leather collar to prevent fur-flattening. Keep it loose on him like the fur saver, that will go a long way to prevent damage to his coat.

This has smaller links fingers can’t fit and collar not on when in crate or by himself
