I'm just curious, those of you who got your GSD from a breeder, did your breeder choose your GSD's name or did you? Also, did you had to put the kennel's name as a prefix on your GSD?

For example, it is required from my breeder that you name the dog "Sequoyah's or Sequoyah ____". So if I stick with the name Mikoto, her name will be Sequoyah's Mikoto.

Do you think it's right for the breeder to choose your dog's name? I'm not saying it's wrong, but I'm just curious. Why would a breeder want to name a puppy that they are selling?

Our breeder did not choose the name, but did want to know what we eventually chose. Naturally, the breeder would want a name from the litter's letter for their records so they would want a 'B' name for their B litter, etc. Some breeders have kennel 'subjects'- my nephew bought a gsd from a breeder that uses attorney's names, so he named his puppy Mason as in Perry Mason. It depends on the contract you have with the breeder as far as showing, future breeding, etc but if you bought your pup to be a pet you certainly can call it anything you want and give it a registered kennel name for their records.

For my girl, my breeder let me pick her name, but I had to add vom haus Marcellus at the end, so she is Kokoda vom haus Marcellus. There are a lot of breeders out there though, that either pick the name or specify what letter it starts with (ie what letter is assigned to the litter), so that down the road it is obvious what litter each puppy came from.

My breeder let me pick his name and I didn't have to put the kennel name before or after. I would have if she asked me to, though.

I don't think it's wrong for a breeder to name your dog. For some people they get the papers and never look at them again, so to me it really doesn't matter.

Hopefully because they're proud of their line among other things. Actually it's just the registered name they want some control over.

Sequoyah's Mikoto is actually a really nice name. You may have posted this someplace else and I missed it...how did you come up with the name Mikoto?

my pup's registered had to have the kennel
name for his last name. his first name had to start with
an E. Earlheim Helmar vonVollkommen. we call him Loki.
it's a common practice for a breeder wanting the kennel name
used in the dogs name and the first letter of his first name to
begin with the letter of the litter. it's on paper. your dogs
call name is what ever you want to be.

2 reasons basically. One is so the dog can be identified easily by others interested in the breed later down the road. You can look at a dog's name and tell if it may be a littermate to a specific dog, or in the case of French dogs, you can tell what year it was born by the first letter of the name.
Two, so you don't end up with yet another Duke, Bear, King, Max or Molly.
Most breeders I've dealt with gave me the naming scheme and let me name the pup, but a few have had the name already registered, which was fine since I always come up with a different call name if the registered name is difficult. I had one Beauceron whose registered name was going to be Newton, so his call name was Fig .
My current male's registered name is an A litter name, Ankormann von der Wolfenbach, we call him Ron.

Sequoyah's Mikoto is actually a really nice name. You may have posted this someplace else and I missed it...how did you come up with the name Mikoto?

Um, I got it from a video game. I liked the name so much that I've decided to name my future puppy it.

Bianca's did, although her previous owner didn't have to use it as her call name but they did. I thought about changing her name when I got her but could not come up with anything that fit her. I'm guessing she was part of a "B" litter because she came with the wrong paperwork (it was from a littermate and it was another "B" name.)

Some of the Hooligans came already named, some I named. IMHO it's a matter of respect to the breeder to use their kennel name ... I always ask if they want it included or not before registering a dog. I've only had one breeder who didn't want her kennel name used (she used to breed WGSDs and was going into show dogs and I "assume" didn't want the connection).
