OK. I cannot leave water down in the house for the dogs. Because Helo (3 months old) likes to put his feet in the bowl, move it around, push the water out and spread the water out all over the kitchen floor. If he is particularly excited, he takes the bowl and drags it to other rooms! Anyone else see this with their pup? I am not sure what to do about it. Right now I am giving him ice cubes because at least it reduces the mess and slows him down a little ('cause he as to chew them..)

OH Yes LOL Apollo will stand in the water bowl, pick up a full bowl and dump it out. He drinks more water then I ever saw Rocky drink. If the water bowl is empty he will carry if off. I just keep a towel handy and at least my floor is getting washed fairly often.

I tried to ice and Apollo just chased it around the kitchen.

They do make bowls that are more difficult to pick up and carry. Elevating the bowl will help a bit with the footbath concept.

When mine were youngsters, I had an old bath tub I was using as a watering trough for the horse. Puppies would get in it and dig - splash water all over and dislodge the plug.... So the next thing I knew, the horse would need water. When it froze in winter (by that time I had another one I was heating) they'd still try to play in it -- so they skated.

But yes, they would dig in the indoor water dish, the eldest would pick it up and carry it around - bring it to me if she was thirsty...

My 3 1/2 month puppy does this too! We have a low water trough for our horse and he makes a beeline for it as soon as we get outside. He LOVES to hit the water with is paws, bite at it, jump in it... It's cute outside, but we have the same issues in the in-house water bowl where it's not so cute!

I think it's just a phase in puppyhood. I caught Elmo carrying a full water bowl across the living room a few times, spilling some along the way. He used to empty his water bowl in the kitchen sometimes too. We have a word we use for "No" so we did that for a while. He eventually learned he didn't need to carry his water around the house with him.

the funny and irritating things they do. if i caught my dog tipping his bowl i would correct him and try not to laugh. sometimes he would tip his bowl, i correct him and he would tip it again. knowing this is going to happen we placed towels under his bowl. once we did that it wasn't fun for him anymore so he stopped. he'll stop before he spills 5 gallons, LoL. i think bowl tipping is something they just naturally do. he never tipped his food bowl. beside our refrigerator i had 16 oz. plastic soda bottles lined up waiting to go into the refrigerator. our boy would come along and knock each bottle over. he didn't play with them, didn't move them he just knocked them over. this went on for a few weeks and then he just stopped. Thanks for reminding me one of the reasons I am glad Skye is more mature (although she still plays in the outdoor water bucket.)

Try a spill proof bowl. They really work - I keep one in my car. even it your pup carries it, the water won't spill.

Here is a cheap one like I have -

Or you can get the original Buddy Bowl, pricey but very nice and holds up to a half gallon of water - won't spill even it upside down:

"teach him leave it"
working on it. But as he is 3 months old, I am pretty sure there will be plenty more water spills before he gets that command down pat...

thanks for the bowl ideas.. i will see if i can find some locally.

I have the Buddy Bowl which works great, except that Roxie still likes to drop her balls in the water and then carrying the dripping ball through the house ! LOL

OH YES! Riley LOVES her water bowl, she drinks so much of it. when she is finally done (as if) she usually tips it over and then lays in it, and or paws it/bites it/etc. she also "digs" at the bottom of the bowl if it becomes empty- like she is going to dig out some more!! i keep a towel handy and say NO! when she does it, if it gets really bad i take the water away. We also play in a pool outside pretty regularly so she can get her digging done in the proper place!

When Axl was a puppy I had a rather large water bowl in the mudroom for him (silly me!) He would stick his whole head in the bowl....above his eyes...up to his forhead....and blow bubbles. It was hysterical and I couldn't help but laugh. I layed a big bath towel down under the bowl....he had fun and I laughed at how silly he looked. And yes.....he outgrew it in no time.

You gotta love puppies!

Oh, your pup will eventually outgrow his desire to play in his water bowl, but he'll never outgrow the messes he makes drinking water. It's a GSD thing. All our dogs make messes when they drink water. They start a drink in one room, and you can trail them all the way across the house by the drops they leave.

A towel under the bowl, a towel wrapped around the bowel and towels leading away from the bowel seem to have helped a bit. Those and and a good sense of humor. What do I love more? My GSD or my carpet? Yeah. The big furry guy that makes me laugh.

they have better things to do than stand over their water bowl and drip dry...no time for that!
I have a stainless bucket and I fill it at least 2x a day with three dogs. Onyx and Kacie were drinking from it at the same time this morning, too bad I didn't get a pic, it was so cute.

Darn, and I thought my pup had an unusual talent.
I dont leave Kaisers bowl down because empty or full he will carry it around the house. So about every hour or so.. I fill it and give him some water.
At feeding times I put it down with his food.. I can usually count the seconds on my hand for the amount of time that water is all over the kitchen and the bowl is being carried to the other room.
I dont mind cleaning it up.. its the chasing of the towel that drives me nuts!!

Luna has been doing this from the start and was showing no signs of stopping, now she's 8 months old we decided that no and leave it were just not good enough when splashing in the water bowl was so fun!!! She had a metal water bowl which I think made it more fun as she could probably see her reflection or the light in it and it made a fun noise when she dragged it around the house and garden after emptying it!!!

Our solution - was to buy a heavy ceramic bowl, she can still pick it up but don't think she found it very amusing as she only did it the once, now she is perfect with the water (at least that's one problem out of the way) even though she still needs a door mat under the bowl to soak up all the mess she makes purely by drinking!!!
