Well, I adopted a GSD after five years without one this past Christmas. MY Shadow passed away at a ripe old age, and for five years I honestly just didn't feel the urge to have another dog in my life. We have a cat, which is really the womenses pet, but I didn't need another dog.
Late last year that feeling changed, and I decided that it was time for me to start looking at a dog again. My son had been after me to get one for some time (He LOVED Shadow as a boy, and has heard tons of stories about her and my other dog Muffet from my parents) so I started doing my research.
I found this board and learned about rescues. The idea of giving an older dog a home really appealed to me. I know some peoplpe may take umbrage at this, but I was never really big on the puppy time in a dog's life. Heck, my wife teases me that I wasn't even very big on the "baby" part of the kids lives. I liked 'em a LOT better once they started talking.
So anyway, the day after Christmas I went to pick up Bear. He's about 5.5 years old we guess, and he is absolutely wonderful! I am SO grateful to the board for making me think about it, and Nila and Judy of K-9 Services and Rescue in northeast florida http://www.k-9services.net/ for rescuing him.
I have some photos I wanted to post, but they're on my machine, not at a url. Do I need to host them somewhere?
Anyway, he's awesome and I'm grateful. Can't believe it took five years for me to do this, but I'm glad I waited for him. He's the best!
