Hi guys,

First time posting here so will try get straight to the point. I came home two days ago to find my 1 1/2 yr old GSD with a swollen eye socket and right eye unable to completely open. Also, when he gets excited to play with toys he will attempt to bite onto them but yelp in pain and give up. I was wondering if any of you have had any similar experiences with your GSD, and whether or not you think this is MMM or something else?

I have been to the vet and was informed that it may just be a minor bee or insect bite and to just give him anti-inflammatories, however his condition has not improved and I am beginning to worry about my boy!

I have attached photos of Dexter for you all to see. Please let me know what you think he is going through and any course of action/anecdotal information any of you may have.

Many thanks

Hey, welcome to the forum. I don't have any experience with this. However, in this situation if it was just the swollen eye I would be tempted to wait a little, but with combined symptoms in his jaw I would seek further opinion. I believe it needs to be treated fairly promptly with Prednisone. My vet usually hands those out like candy, even if it was just a bee sting my vet would probably have prescribed me Prednisone. Have you tried Benadryl in the mean time if it is allergy / sting related?

There is a test for MMM I believe and you probably need to see a specialist. I would make an appointment with a new vet and tell them what you think it is, ask for immediate treatment and a referral to a specialist. I have been to vets that both way over prescribe for minor illnesses and / or completely ignore or under prescribe other conditions. I believe you need to be your own advocate sometimes, good luck and I hope he gets better soon!

Did the vet check his teeth for any damage?

I would ask to be referred to a specialist if no improvement.

It might be the camera angle but his dewclaw could do with a trim

Welcome by the way

hi, i can chime in a little later... i have a dog diagnosed with this and have been through a couple relapses as well. any vet can send off for the blood test, it’s a couple hundred dollars, but i believe only 2 labs in the US conduct the test.
