I have noticed he has an occasional limp in front leg for a 5 days, then it seemed over the weekend it is the other one. Jake is acting totally normal, eating normal and not whining or crying.

I have been doing aspirin and started Vit c, is there anything else I need to do? I have read that in some cases the vet gives an antibiotic? Why is that? Does he need to see a vet? I am really on the fence because he acts happy, full of energy and completely normal. IF it is Pano I am assuming it is a mild case.

Jake is 8.5 months.

Thanks in advance for the insight.

I haven't had the Pano issue with any of my GSD's so I can't say. I am not one to go rushing off to the vet at the first sign of an illness. If it were my dog, I would watch him and if it isn't better in a week or gets worse, then I would call the vet.

To confirm the dog has pano you do have to get an x ray which will show the striations in the bone. Until my pup was 14 months he had it on and off, and it went back and forth between the two front legs. We did the aspirin and vit c, and used rimadyl sparingly. No antibiotics for us.

You don't really need to go to the vet to confirm pano, more to eliminate anything else as the cause. If you go the rimadyl route, you'll need to get that from the vet I believe. My problem was a dog that doesn't know how to limit himself, and worrying it could be something more serious.

Sounds exactly like what Abby had. Was on and off from 5 - 9 months... and gone ever since. Yes, it was pano.. according to the vet and the breeder.
Can't say that I would advise aspirin, though. Let nature take its course.

I don't think you have to eliminate it. Just cut down on long walks on pavement. If you can walk in the woods ...........? As I said, mine got over it at around 8 months and she has been fine since.

Also, I have read conflicting articles on the "known" causes of Pano, and one that stuck out to me was too much protein??? Confused?
Well, it's an inflamation so I don't know how protein figures in. All the reading I did said that it can come and go for 2 years. If the limping persists I know you will go to the vet .... maybe he/she can give you an anti-inflamatory that is acceptable for dogs. Mine just said to back off on the exercise, which I did.

hi renee, when Cody had pano he restricted his own exercise...poor guy

one time the vet gave him anti-inflamatories. the other time nothing. never any antibiotics.

i took short walks/potty breaks and just let him walk or run when he wanted, but didnt play fetch or take him on long walks

Personally, I think Pano is caused by the genetic structure of the dog. If they are on the large end of the scale, long legged and have big growth spurts, Pano will hit.

I've fed two dogs raw, those two are bigger than average and both have had bouts of Pano.
Vitamin C will lessen the length of the bout as it reduces inflammation.
I would also give aspirin if the dog seems to be really uncomfortable.
Limit the hikes but let the dog self limit.
And of course, if you are doing sportwork, that should be put on hold while the dog is limping.

Ok, I just HATE this! Jake is definitely on the large end of the scale although he is thin and lean. He is going to be a big dog with a big bone structure, no doubt about that. I started to up the amount of C and will do my best to limit his exercise.

I am about to join a DVG club 2 hours north of here...we visited Sat and I really liked everyone and from what I understand they have a great helper....he just placed in World. The amount of time he is actually out on the field is so small, can he still go? We are so new we barely know what to do.... I was planning on going this Sat. I am just scratching the surface on ScH....however I don't want to do anything that will cause more harm. He really seems unaffected right now but I certainly want it to stay that way. I have felt his front legs and he is fine....all he wants to do is bite me....:)

Renee, Jake won't hurt himself more if they do an evaluation on him. He can still track and do obedience, just the protection work shouldn't be intense. When Karlo went thru his bouts, I really didn't notice it, but my training director/helper did, and wouldn't work him in protection which was fine with me. Karlo was very large and I didn't want him hurt.

Ok, good because we haven't really started the protection yet....last week he bit the puppy sleeve and got to take back to the crate....but that's all, certainly he isn't doing any bark and hold.....I wish we were at a place where he was "intense"....it will be be a while. :) I am glad that learning to lay tracks and and learn some obedience is ok....I am anxious to learn and get started. I will update in a few days on his condition...

Well, Jake has pano, it has been moving a bit to each front leg or at least it seems. I think this must be a mild bout...no crying and he is still letting me feel his legs....

I understand this may come and go for many months but those of you who have experienced this how long did each bout last? Days? Weeks? A month?
