Well Max has been limping on his right hind leg since Wed. We have been concerned about his hips, because he walks funny on his hind legs, and now he is limping. He does not seem to be in any pain. We go this afternoon. Pray for Max.

Thanks.

Re: Going to the Vet

he most likely pulled a muscle!!!!
He'll be fine, if he isn't in any pain then you are golden!!!
I will keep my fingers crossed!!!
Good luck
Re: Going to the Vet

One of my fosters is doing this also. He was adopted today, though. Woohoo!! I am sure that his is a strain/sprain from rough play.

Max will be in my prayers. Please let us know how he is after the vet.

I"m so sorry. Please keep us informed.
Re: Going to the Vet

Vet is suggesting triple pelvic osteotomy. I called the surgeons office and this surgery is $5000 to do both sides and $3000 for one side. Vet gave us Rimadyl for pain and inflamation. I am bummed out right now. Anyone living with HD that has not been able to have surgery done? Encouragement please.

Try also posting on the orthodogs Yahoo group.

I didn't know they were that expensive, but see you are in CA. I know you can tell when pets on IMOM are in CA!

Did he say it was moderate? Severe? I have one (mix) with mild who has had no surgery and another mix who had an FHO as she had moderate-severe HD and arthritis.

It is a difficult thing. Best of luck to you and your Max.

Re: Going to the Vet

There are tons of dogs on this board with HD. I have one lying at my feet right now. He is on a double dose of joint supplement. I can't afford his surgery just yet and so far that's doing the trick for him. He doesn't limp and is much less stiff than before I put him on it. He is very active with lots of long walks and play time. I do limit his running and jumping though.

My first gsd had bilateral HD and I got her a minor surgery when she was a year old and then a total hip replacement when she was 5 years old.

Isn't Max just a pup?
Is this an Ortho vet? If not, please take x-rays and get an opinion from an Ortho!!

People on this board have had experience with folks whose pups have been put down for HD and it was actually a really bad x-ray and Pano.

Re: Going to the Vet

Hey Dawn,

First of all where in CA are you located? I would definately get a second opinion before doing anything! There have been surigical recommendations for dogs who really don't need it so I would really be careful before rushing into surgery! The positioning is critical in determining where a dog is dysplastic. Also there is some normal laxity when the pups are young which makes them wobbley, especially if they are growing fast. Your pup seems large for his age which could be contibuting to his problem. I would suggest getting a second opinion and starting your pup on ester-c, vitamin e and a glucosime/chondroiten supplement in the mean time.
Re: Going to the Vet

Vet said it was mild HD. He did refer me to an ortho doc. The vet i went to has alot of exp. doing OFA for dogs. Max was sedated and the doc did the positioning himself.

I am in the central valley.

Re: Going to the Vet

Max is going to the ortho doc on June 30. My husband has always said he would never pay alot of money on an animal but that was before Max! I will keep everyone posted.

Update Max & Ortho Vet

Just got back from seeing the ortho doc. He was talking about repeating the xrays until we went outside and he saw how Max was walking. He is real wobbly in the back. The vet showed me how Max seemed unaware of his toes (the vet would fix his foot as if Max was standing on his toes and Max would not respond, he just left his foot there.) Doc is thinking neurology. He checked all his reflexes which were not normal. Max was very good as he had to lay on his side while the vet did all this and his assistant kept Max on his side. He only squirmed a little then settled right down. So tomorrow we are driving over 100 miles to go to see a neurologist. He feels there could be two problems one neurological and the other ortho but he wants the first to be addressed because it is more serious. He didn't want to put Max out for x-rays because the neurologist will probally do the same thing. I will keep everyone updated with tomorrows visit.
For those who pray please pray.

I'll send my wishes for an answer that's fixable, a fix that's affordable and many happy days ahead for you and Max.
