Just wanted to mention this very special dwarf, owned and loved by Beth Shea for 10 years! His breeder knew by 10 weeks that he was a dwarf, and the early diagnosis probably helped contribute to his long life. He was finally helped over the bridge at the age of 16!! Also, he escaped some of the other physical defects (malformed kidneys, etc.) that frequently occur with the dwarfism gene.

****, I still can't read that beautiful tribute Beth wrote without crying! Julia is Julia Priest of Kennel von Sontausen, and Nemo was bred by Shelly Strohl (Frauengarten Kennel). She was the one who gave him to Julia at 10 weeks old, as she already knew a) he was a dwarf and b) he already was showing potential as a schutzhund dog (if he could get his mouth around the sleeve!) 🤣 Beth's story of doing a herding test with Nemo is one of my all-time favourite stories!

Nemo's pedigree will surprise a lot of people: Nemo He was one of two dwarfs in this litter, which, of course, was not repeated. Lasso also produced dogs that suffered from DM. Thank goodness there is now a genetic test for both problems. But if you look at the number of pups sired by Lasso, you will see what a huge problem it would be to completely weed out these defective genes.
