A Huntington Police Department dog with a successful drug-detecting career died on Monday.

Huntington Chief Skip Holbrook said canine officer Rio was participating in a exercise when he collapsed. Officers took Rio to a veterinary hospital, but they were not able to resuscitate him.

Since Rio entered the police force in September of 2009, he has sniffed out 1,412 grams of cocaine, 400 grams of heroin, 1,942, grams of marijuana and 1,884 doses of pills. Rio and handler, Officer Ronnie Lusk, tracked 50 suspects that led to 17 arrests.

There are currently six other K-9 units in service. Huntington police are now searching for Rio's replacement.

RIP Rio. Your work here is done and you have gone to that pasture where you can chase and play all day.
