Kodee seems to have finally settled down enough that I think he can get a new bed, and not chew it up. LOL! We no longer use a crate for him, and he does really well in the evenings hanging out with me in the living room, while I watch TV or whatever after the kids are all in bed. Most nights he lays on his bed (a fairly thin, cheap crate pad/blanket), chewing on a toy or something. He does have a really nice fleece one from Leerburg for my bedroom, but it's more of a "mat" than a plush bed, which is what I'd like to get him for the living room. I'd also like something a little longer than that. When he sleeps in my room at night, he ends up on the tile floor by the French doors, at least as much, if not more than, his bed most of the time.

I looked at beds at Petco today, and then online, and the xlarge dog beds just don't do anything for me.
The main thing is that they look just barely long enough for him to stretch out on. He's not really heavy at 71 lbs., but he's still growing some, and he's LONG when he stretches out as far as he can, which is how he always sleeps.

Anyone know of some websites that I can order a bigger than usual dog bed? This isn't critical, but it's something I'd like to get him, and if I'm going to buy one, I'd like it to be big, comfy and well-made. (Preferably with a washable cover). Thanks!

I actually tried a crib-mattress - we had one already, as my 2-1/2 yr old is in a twin bed now, and no more babies for me!
Anyway, Kodee hates it. He will lay on the rug right next to it, but not on the mattress. I think it might be too "stiff" for him. He likes his soft fleece bed, but not the vinyl mattress (even w/a flannel crib sheet on it). Personally, the sound of him or the kids moving around on it makes me nuts anyway. The vinyl is sort of "loud" when they shift around on it, if that makes sense.

But, I gave it a shot...

This is what I do - buy one of those "egg carton foam" mattress pads from somewhere cheap (Target, Walmart...), like a twin bed sized unless you want a lot of layers. Then I fold it or cut it into strips so I have the layers I want. I either use an old sheet and sew a simple, giant pillow case for it, or I just get an old blanket and wrap it up like a sub sandwich (around, and then flip the ends under). Giant dog bed, about $20. VERY easy to wash b/c I just take off the pillow case or the blankets wrapping it.

Or if you want it deluxe, you can get memory foam from Overstock.com for cheap. I got 1inch queen sized for $50. Cut that up and that would make a pretty thick, comfy dog bed!

kuranda beds. Only bed my boy hasn't ripped up. expensive at first, but I've had one for three years and plan to get another one soon. If only he would decide to sleep in it at night instead of on the corner of my bed.

expensive up front, but there's really only one part that could possibly be damaged and require replacing and if you get the heavy nylon fabric you would have to do some serious abusing of it to get it ripped. Extremely easy to clean and best of it sits off the floor to allow air circulation/ vaccuming without having to move it. I got the metal legs because I'm old school and don't yet trust pvc, but I know people that have big dogs and use the plastic ones and say they hold up fine. and on hot days if your working outside and the dogs hanging out there with you you can dump ice in them and it makes a nice bed/cool spot.

I highly reccommend these beds. In fact I'm going to order my second one right now.

they make a Kuranda fleece top, but I've found most standard sized "fleece" beds fit right in the kuranda. my boy has a 50x35 and we use a big fleece bed for inside crates to put on top of the kuranda. their fleece top is kind of expensive you can get the same thing for less somewhere else.

Crib mattress!

Big, cushy, and being a spring mattress it will last much longer than the typical polyfill dog beds. You can get a waterproof mattress pad to fit over it. You have a whole selection of crib sheets to choose from to find something that matches the decor, and best of all you just pull off the sheets and put them in the washer.

Mine have 2 beds

The corner bed, which I got because Brenna is more secure in corners:

and the crate with an old comforter:

P.S. Please excuse the shabbiness/dirty laundry. :p

I second the Kuranda bed, my dog loves it. I also have the Coolaroo bed from Petco, similar to the Kuranda but lighter. We even take this on trips. I like not having bedding that gets smelly and is a job to wash.
Either of these beds stay cleaner, plus get the dog off the hard floor without having to use padding.

I got my Kuranda from here: http://www.upnorthstore.com/kuranda.html
I think the prices were a little less and it was shipped fast.
