My 4 yo m GSD got hurt Sunday with horiz lacerations to both rear legs just below the hock joint. He also has a puncture wound on the top of his rear left foot. The vet said no tendon, nerve, muscle damage, just nasty lacerations from barbed wire. He got stitched up and bandaged, with tramadol for pain and an antibiotic cephalexan. They gave me a cone for his head, but he won't tolerate it. Does licking on the stitched wound on his foot and eventually when the bandages come off, his legs pose an infection issue? Would a muzzle be better? How often should I replace his bandages? Thanks in advance.

wont tolerate the cone how? him licking could cause a yeast build up that could cause infection on top of the new bacteria he's introducing to the area.

He does everything he can to get it off. Someone mentioned an inflatable donut from Petco. Ill try that.

thats actually a lot more comfortable and its not as scary. Dogs dont like the cone because it limits their vision and their movement and if they catch the side on a wall or something, it will snap back and can actually hurt them like they got smacked or something similar. and it makes eating a complete and total PITA.

Give some live probiotics while your dog is on the antibiotics. It will keep the good bacteria and floura going in his/her system instead of the antibiotic killing good as well as bad bacteria. Also, supplements geared on healing and building up the immune system wouldn't be a bad idea for healing either. There are alot of good ones out there. I use the Nzymes, but used to use Nupro with good results. Some I know use Missing Link others NuVet. I've tried them all, but have gotten the best results from the Nzymes. Go to their website. A groomer friend of mine has a lab with a horrible cyst (called a lick granuloma) in between the digits of his paws. Ever time the weather gets wet, it breaks opens, ooozes and gets infected. She back to the vet for another round of antibiotics. After only 2 weeks on the Nzyme granules the cyst is almost healed and no more antibiotics! She is so relieved and couldn't thank me enough.
