JUSTICE for Roxy - Starved & EU'd GSD

4177 Views 45 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  Anja1Blue
For those of you who have been following the plight of poor starved Roxy, who was EU'd by Miami Dade AS even tho there were rescues & individuals willing to step forward and save her - please consider signing this petition !!

Thank you,
Mike

Roxy's thread here:
http://www.germanshepherds.com/foru...mi-fl-6y-o-f-roxie-starved-rip-poor-girl.html

The petition (over 2000 sigs already !).

Here is a petition on behalf of Roxy, a severely emaciated GSD, owner-turn-in to Miami Dade, who paid for the crimes committed against her with her life. She stood proud and alert, her ears up, for the camera after her owner signed her death warrant. She was killed immediately after turn-in.

The crimes committed against her created an intense outcry from animal lovers and advocates across the country.

A tripple header:

1. Her owner's abuse/neglect for her health and quality of life cost Roxy her life.

2. Why were charges not levied against the owner, or an investigation held? Regardless of cause or health issues, it is reprehensible beyond words to allow a life to suffer and waste to the extreme state of emaciation found with Roxy.

3. The unwillingness of the shelter to allow rescue and rehabilitation for Roxy. Many rescues and individuals stepped forward to help. Roxy had a local rescue ready to take her in. Policy should dictate that an animal brought in for euthanasia be signed over to the shelter for disposition.

Here is the petition:

Discover or Animal Planet (can't remember who's series this is) did one of their Animal Cops shows there & they sure painted a different picture than what we are finding out !!
Animal Planet. I think they should dump Miami- Dade and stop making them look like heroes. From what I have been able to determine, this business of euth'ing animals even when a rescue has committed to them is not unusual in this shelter. I'm sure Roxy is NOT an isolated example of what can happen here. (It's an awful place by the way - HUGE, with hundreds of dogs, cats, and who knows what else at all times. The numbers aren't their fault - their policies are.)

I signed too. Is the Miami-Dade Animal Cops still on? I don't watch Animal Planet too much any more. If it is, we should complain to Animal Planet.
I believe AP is owned by the Discovery Network. There is nothing on their website which gives you a link to connecting with the powers that be. I'm going to see if Google has any info.......

Please post that here if you find it, I would like to "share" the petition and our disgust with them.

I did send a note today to all the powers at the shelter + the mayor, the commissioners & their public relations office stating that the GSD community was not going to just go away quietly on this & that we wanted an explaination and proof that there would be policys put in place to prevent this from occuring.

No answer so far, but my next step will be to contact the media (local & national) and any candidates running for MD office in Nov. & maybe that will get their attention.

If any of them respond to my note, I will post in this thread.

Thanks Mike so much for sharing this, and for your hard work in contacting the appropriate people..... I wish it made me feel better - but in truth it doesn't. If Roxy had been too weak to stand, if she had been unresponsive in any way I would have understood the need to "humanely euthanize her on intake." But the fact is she WAS able to stand on her own, her ears were up and she looked alert. All I can hope is that this shelter is on notice now that people -many people -are watching. This isn't the first time I have heard negative things about Miami-Dade..........as I said in an earlier post, the sheer numbers are not their fault - but their policies are, and not to give a creditable out of state rescue a chance to rehabilitate the Roxy's of the world means that it can be an automatic death sentence for that dog.
Roxy, we will never forget you....... you will live on in your puppies...

Thanks for posting this but there are a few things I don't understand.

If she was euthanized upon arrival, how did her profile end up on the internet??

Why was she put to sleep after 3 rescues had already made a spot available for her and were willing to treat her??

I really appreciate the effort you went to but I think that answer is BS.
Agreed, BS, and I intend to write to Ms. Pizzano and tell her as much. She tries to put up a smoke screen of statistics to divert attention from the real topic at hand. If you read alisagirl's earlier post you will see that M-D is not a nice place, and has a reputation for being quick on the draw even when rescue is waiting. What needs to be changed is their policy - no-one is suggesting they hand their animals over to just anyone: but it is easy enough to check out credentials in this age of the Internet.

My gut feeling is that someone at M-D may have "leaked" the info - and that's how it ended up on the Internet. Even in the worst shelters there is usually one person who is more compassionate than the rest, and who doesn't agree with the way things are being handled. The above response is not good enough - we aren't interested in reading a bunch of statistics, we are only interested in finding out what and why happened to this particular dog. Their reluctance to work with out of state rescues doesn't hold up - others do it and successfully - rescues here in Colorado, for example, accept GSD's (and others) from out of state all the time. Organizations can easily be vetted, and word travels very fast nowadays if a group is one to be avoided. I would bet money that with the number of animals passing through their doors, more end up back in bad situations than ever would being sent to a reputable out of state rescue - if they check every person and home they adopt out to thoroughly, I for one would be very surprised.

Petition has been closed?

Was going to sign and post to FB
They were asking for 4500 signatures, they got 4772 - so I assume they felt they had reached their goal.

Article in today's Miami Herald re Animal Control - a new shelter would be of great benefit: Groups join to rescue animals - Miami-Dade - MiamiHerald.com

Read more: Groups join to rescue animals - Miami-Dade - MiamiHerald.com
A powerhouse animal-welfare group has joined with three Miami-Dade agencies to increase the number of homeless cats and dogs leaving the county shelter alive.
On Wednesday, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals launched a partnership with the Miami-Dade Animal Services Department, the Humane Society of Greater Miami Adopt-a-Pet and the Cat Network to attack a pet overpopulation problem that claims more than 21,000 lives annually at the shelter -- and thousands more on the streets.
Nationally, it's believed that municipalities kill 3 million to 4 million unwanted pets each year. That's 456 every hour.

This is good to hear. But it still doesn't address the fact that M-D will not work with out of state rescues, which is what would have kept Roxy alive. Breed specific rescues, if reputable, are still best for dogs like the GSD IMHO, if they have the space.

Actually, it's my understanding that there was an in-state rescue and a local individual willing to take Roxie in addition to the out-state rescue & she was still EU'd.
Wow - didn't know about the local person. That only makes it worse then....People in Texas and Georgia rescue call Miami-Dade "The Death Camp". A frantic appeal went out yesterday for 2 8 week old GSD puppies which are there - and on death row if someone doesn't grab them fast. :(

Just to let those of you who cared about Roxy know - I sent a letter of protest to the Director of Miami-Dade several weeks ago. It is not surprising that I have not received a reply. The fact that this person is, apparently, also a veterinarian, makes this whole business seem somehow worse. I don't think it matters who they team up with, or how many other organizations become involved - without a basic change in policy this can and will happen again. I think we can all agree however that Director Pizano will not soon forget Roxy - she might dismiss her but she will not lose the memory of her.
