Hi everyone! I recently rescued a 1.5 year old white GSD who was found as a stray. He is the most wonderful dog and we are bonding so well! I am a bit worried, though, about how much he scratches and chews on his fur. I took him to the vet with a list of the ingredients in his food (Blue Buffalo wilderness duck formula) and he said he didnt think it was allergies and just normal scratching. He doesn't have fleas, but he is scratching ALL the time. Is this normal for a a GSD? He sheds like crazy and I brush him everyday also. Thanks!

normal scratching? hmm

give the dog some essential fatty acids -- fish oil, hemp oil

how are the stools and digestion?

you could give him a good shampoo , with Selsun Blue xstrong , just in case that he has a bit of a fungal problem , that would irritate him the same way that athletes foot would drive you crazy.

I think Carmen has given several good suggestions, but if those don't work out, I would look again into the allergy angle.
