Ava is shedding like crazy and when I say crazy I mean crazy! When I pet her I have tons of hair in my hand, it looks to be more like the undercoat, I can see on her the loose hair. I was wondering if this is normal?

Thanks for any input ....

They don't call them "German Shedders" for nothing

Lots of brushing - I like to use a combination of a slicker brush, a rake, and Furminator. My girls both blow their coat two times a year - once in the spring and once in the fall. One of them sheds pretty consistently throughout the year, but she has health problems and a lot of undercoat.

Oh, and I'd invest in those sticky rollers for hair removal on clothing, furniture, etc!

Thanks for the feedback I feel better now that it seems to be the norm.

I also think I might invest in a furminator. I'm sure it will be money well spend between having a GSD and Golden Retriever.

My 10 yo spayed bitch lost her undercoat all at once this spring. The vet was convinced it was flea bite dermititis (sp) but I think she might have just decided to blow her coat. She'd never done it so dramatically before. Fleas are now gone, coat is back and all is well with just normal shedding here. So - if your dog hasn't done this before it might be a sensitivity to something in her environment.
