Dogzilla frisbee was gnawed through within 5 minutes. Various stuffed animals meet their demise rather quickly (and he loves eating the stuffing).

Tons of money spent on indestructible toys that last barely any time at all.

I hadn't even thrown the tags away yet. There was a big rubber ball with a squeaker in that frayed mess at the top. I threw this bit away, took out the squeaker, and let him play with hard ball. "I see you got the dog a new ball", my dad said when I got home. "It's not a ball..." I replied.

He destroys every toy he gets. The only thing he has left to chew on are knucklebones. He adores stuffed toys, but they die too quickly. He rips holes in his blanket.

I need at least ONE toy he can chew on without it being ripped to shreds in minutes. "Indestructible", to Spock, is more like "Slightly more challenging than a piece of bread". Any help?

My best recommendation would be a Kong or a Jolly Ball. I've never given a dog a Jolly Ball, but my horse never wrecked his (granted, they have vastly different jaw structures, but still) and I've seen several posters who recommend them for dogs as well. And I know they come in dog sizes. Good luck with the pup -- LOVE the name!

Niko has put some major damage onto his Jolly Ball (the big hard kind, not the soft one with the handle) but it's still going strong.

Don't bother trying the Tuffy line of toys. Majorly NOT indestructible. DH called to complain, got the response "They are interactive toys" which translates into you have to be right there to stop your dog from chewing on it in order for it to be indestructible.

The Cuz toys seem to hold up well for us too. (See avatar - that's the frog)

The only thing we've had that is close to indestructible, and by that I mean it takes a long time, is the Gallileo bone by Nylabone. All other Nylabones, toys, balls, anything at all our foster can and has destroyed quickly and easily. Toys have we have had for a number of years that our dogs don't destroy, gone in seconds.

The Gallileo bone has taken months -- he has wore down a corner, but other than that, its the only thing. He also likes Elk Antlers -- they eventually do wear down, but they take a bit of time too.

You have to use some common sense when it comes to choosing dog toys. If your toy has fabric or is a soft thin rubber, I don't care what the label says, you should know your dog will rip it to shreads if he's the destroying type.

There are non-destructable toys, but they are things like kongs, durable nylabones, etc. The hard toys and VERY thick rubber toys commonly talked about here.

Black Kongs will last 3 to 4 weeks at my house. Kinda frustrated to pay 18 bucks every time until we found out that if the dog destroys it, Petco will replace N/C since the manufacturer says it is indestructible. I think the accepted time is 30 days but we have been returning/rotating and it has worked out.

Industructible is not a misnomer for a dog, it is a challenge.

If the dog wants it destroyed, it will be destroyed.

My poodles are worse than most GSDs about that.

Oddly enough, my boy has not destroyed a single toy since we got him. We even leave wubbies in his crate at night now....go figure....I am glad because toys are $$

My dog is not a real chewer - she had a red kong for ages...until our foster destroyed it last night, but she has always shredded anything she can get her mouth on, but we have the Dog Tuff Ring and they have held up really well. They actually sponsor one of the forum topics (I am in no way associated!). They are the only fabric thing she is allowed, other than ropes with all of the stringy ends cut off. I am only on my second since bringing her home 18 months ago, and the first one actually had a defect, where there was just the slightest frayed edge on the edging that she attacked and it went from there, so I always give them a good inspection in the store. The new one is probably 6 months old and it looks brand new. Their products have different durability ratings, I would only pick from the higher ones. They will replace a chewed thing once I think.

We have a red Kong, a black Kong, and a dark blue Kong. Out of the three, the dark blue is the most indestructible and is still going strong. The black is usually packed somewhere for training and the red is usually filled with treats and therefore functions as more of a treat dispenser than a toy.

The Cuz is still going for us, too, once the feet came off.

If all else fails, you can buy sections of sand-blasting hose for your dog. Most of the working dog suppliers carry them now. Or you can get the Egge, which is a big, egg-shaped ball - too big for them to gnaw on.

All dogs are different, what last for one will be destroyed in seconds by others. No dog toy is indestructible, it's only a matter of time. With that said, if you know your dog, you can usually find a toy that should last a reasonable amount of time.

Plush Toys, like Tuffys, Mighty, and GoDog are all above average for durability. Tuffy being at the top, especially their mega series. The key is to look for toys that would be more difficult to chew. Look for plush toys that are over-sized for your dog, and don't have small pieces sticking out. The Mega Ring and Mega Odd Ball would be a great choice for GSD. Plush toys are still made of fabric though. They should only be used for supervised plays. If your dog gnaws at it for extended periods he's going to get though it.

Rubber Toys, like Kong, West Paw Design, Planet Dog, and Cuz are great for dogs that like to chew. Each brand has toys that are more durable than others. Again, it's a good rule of thumb to look for toys that are a little larger for your dog. It makes it more difficult to get a hole started. Whenever you purchase a rubber toy, make sure it has two holes in it. This prevents suction in the toy that can suck your dogs tongue into it. For the really aggressive chewers, we've had good luck with Black Kongs, ZogoFlex Bumi, ZogoFlex Hurley, Orbee Diamond Plate Ball, Orbee Snow Ball, and the Orbee Soccer Ball.

I can attest to some of the toys mentioned by Dog Tuff since my dog loves chewing things.

West Paw Design's Zogoflex Hurley, Huck and Tux are great (my dog doesn't show as much interest). The JW Pet Cuz toys are good, but she destroys the squeaker and keeps playing with it. The Planet Dog Orbee globe on a rope is good, but she likes the rope more than the ball and the Orbee soccer ball she loves to chase.

Miya's favourite toy to chew and fetch though is the West Paw Design Bow-Wowser ball made of a material called enduroplay that got discontinued so we raided the pet stores in the city and bought 12 of them to save for a rainy day.

You would think that it's cute or funny seeing a dog with its tongue stuck in a ball, but it can have very serious consequences. In 2008, there was the story of a dog named Chai - online at The Chai Story - who actually lost most of his tongue after this happened.
