About getting the dogs rehomed before the surgery, if it were me, I think I would rather arrange for them to be cared for by the people caring for my house dogs. This is why: if the new home had a toddler or teenager or other dog or cat that was not getting on with the high energy teenager that she is placing, how is she going to manage taking the dog back from her hospital bed? If she has trustworthy friends, partners, or family it COULD work. But for me it would be a serious risk unless I was very good friends with the people taking the dog.
