Hi everyone,

we are in upstate NY, in farm country. Fencing is not an option right now. I will be watching our puppy always when he is outdoors, but the problem is the moment he hears horse hoofs( lot of Amish here) he bolts after the wagon, and he usually hears it before I do. He takes off instantly. Literally splitsecond. And his speed is incredible. SO I basically need some way to tether him while we play outdoors or do obedience training. And I would like him to have the freedom of running or just sniffing in the yard. Did I mention I will be watching him as long as he is outdoors and tethered to the runner?

I have seen dogs tied to the clothesline and they can run back and forth along the clothes line plus , have the radius of the leash. Our neighbour(who passed away last year) did this. Does anyone have any idea how to do this? Or any other way I can keep him safe?

I worry though that if he takes off at such a speed the jerk when he is pulled back could very well damage his neck/ shoulders/ joints :(

Thanks in advance!

You can use some bungee cord to make sure the dog doesn't injure himself if he runs the length of the line. It will also mean that the rope won't get tangled up.

If I was you I'd train the dog not to react to the noise of the horses. Walk him around areas you know there will be horses and desensitize him to their sound etc.

Thanks, Madlab. I got the bungee cord.

Yes, I am going to be working on desensitizing him to horse drawn wagons. He is okay with horses. And he is okay with cars, bikes. bicycles, scooters.

You should fence yourself somehow as quickly as your finances allow you. And train your puppy for the sound inside the house. You need recording for that. Use dictaphone for recording. A recorded sound which causes some sort of great excitemnt/irritation/anxiety in your dog can be replayed at the lower sound level first, then louder, and louder. Ask your puppy to sit while he listens. The reason for doing it - to stop your puppy living in anticipation of that sound. Secondly, train your puppy to meet horses and carriage coming towards you. You should come to the road with your puppy and wait for one. Train him to keep in sitting position until the carriage dissapears. Walk him on the side of the road if possible and train him "heel" while carriages are passing by, try to find out what exactly is so interesting for him. It very well could not the horses but the sound of the wheels and their movement be so attractive for him, similar to the interest dogs pay to bicycles, horses only announce it. Meet him with horses (keeping distance, of course) and bicycles separately in places most certainly you will find them, it might help him to lose his interest. But, mainly I'd press on obedience, he must return with your first recall, he must sit when he was told to sit, and he must walk without pulling the lead when he was told to heel. If he does it badly in other distractive situations, he wouldn't be obedient when something really makes him nuts.
