Hi. I take one long vacation a year (2 to 4 weeks) and I take all of my animals with me (2 dogs and 1 cat). I go to my cottage up north in Ontario. I have taken as many as 3 dogs with me and had to share the cottage with my brother and his three dogs one year too. Yikes, we're talking a VERY small cottage.
When I lived too far from my cottage to visit every summer I found cabins to rent or went camping or backpacking so that I could take my dogs with me.

For shorter trips, unless I'm going away for work or have to fly across the country, I take my dogs with me. I either stay with friends or family where I can have the dogs or look for pet friendly motels or stay at a campground.

Hello there. I travel quite extensively with my female chi- she's great.
I used to travel with a travel trailer with my two big GS's, they are both gone now, but we JUST BOUGHT a second cousin to my male that passed away in December, he's 13weeks. The travel trailer will become useful again, and we do have our own generator, so air cond. /electric is not a problem.

I sure would like to form a travel group with a bunch of you guys, anyone interested?
I have a FABULOUS place in the southern hills of south dakota that we travel to 2-3 times a yr, very dog friendly, the beaches are outsanding, the water is clear and clean, and 80degrees in July/August. A hidden adventure, 40min's from Mt. Rushmore, etc.

Both depending on who/what/when/where.
This June I'm going to CA with a friend to see some other friends. We used to get together every year (begining in 1994) but haven't been able to the last 5 or so. So Dante's going to the kennel.

Others it's Dante and I

We do both. We've taken Dena on a week long vacation to Oregon & Washington to visit friends and family, (before we got Keefer), and have taken both dogs on long weekends up to a really nice place in Mendocino on the Northern California coast.

But we've also gone to Indiana to visit my hubby's relatives without the dogs, and spent a week in Hawaii a month ago, obviously without the dogs. We tend to only take real vacations every couple of years, so we try to plan some short trips with the dogs in mind.

I will be
But sadly it's a whirlwind trip, leaving Portland on the 25th and heading back on the 29th so I won't be able to get in any meets

Of course I'm also not even sure where we're staying at this point, no one actually lives there anymore. In 1994 I was the only one that didn't live in the Bay area, now 2 are in FL, one in WA, one in AZ and me here in Oregon....that's why it's been so long since our last get together.

Generally, yes, the dogs go with me. Usually two dogs, once in a while I have just one. I do road trips when I can. Now I've moved too far away to visit a lot of people by car. But I did drive up to Denver with the dogs. I rented a car to do it because their old bones don't do well jammed two dogs & one human in the cab of an old 1/2 ton ford.

I did take one dog on a 6 to 8 week road trip once. It was a good time. When I stayed with friends, he stayed in a kennel but mostly we camped - we did one night at a motel. It was a good time. That was 28 years ago, I'd just had the engine in my old VW squareback rebuilt (body looked like h*ll) and quit my job & took off! (Put my belongings into storage...I don't remember just where on that one...) The other dog who wouldn't have been up for the trip stayed with a friend. The friend and I are still speaking BTW...

And I took my dogs on a lot of business trips, too! Sometimes, they would stay with a friend - other times the motel...

We try to plan all of our vacations so the dogs can join us. But, if we go somewhere they can't go (like Hawaii), my parents come down and dogsit for us (or we'll drop them off at their house). We like doing outdoorsy things, so them being there hasn't really restricted us any. If there is something we want to do on vacation that the dogs can't (like go to a National Park or ski), we've just boarded them for the day (or half a day) and will spend the rest of the trip doing dog friendly activities.

Wait? Me? Vacation? I haven't had a vacation since High School. heh.

But pretty much, wherever I go, Taedyn goes. She has a severe case of separation anxiety, so there's no way I could board her, or even put her on a plane. So, I'm pretty much limited to car trips to dog-friendly areas for the next 6+ years.

Every time we have gone a vacation but once we have taken the dogs. We ususally only go camping and when we go it is completely planned around them. We are upgrading our pop up to a camper, because we need something bigger for the dogs!!!

I've always taken one or two of the Hooligans with me on vacation trips. The rest stayed in the kennel. My vet bills have been astronomical last year and so far this year so no vacations. Hopefully next year I'll be able to make it down to Sanibel Island for a week.

Since moving to FL in 1995, the longest trip I ever took was with Mac & Slider in 2003 to Tehachapi, CA. But over the past 13 years I've taken trips with a Hooligan or two to TX, IA, TN, MD, WV, MS, DE and several spots in FL.

I almost have panic attacks when I plan any trip without my dogs. I need more help in this department than they do. I am a control freak O have come to realize.

I just don't trust anyone, so I don't kennel my dogs. We get a house-sitter and if that fails we don't go. Since I've been fostering, we really don't go on any vacations. But, we do go to Florida for the winter with our two GSDs. Everything is planned around the dogs!

It's too funny.....where we go in Fla is not even near dog-friendly! All we see are little white, fuzzy ankle-biters. When we come down the sidewalk, you can see the terror in the owners eyes at seeing a 90lb GSD approaching!! They cross the street to get away from us (sometimes hubby crosses back over again
).....all the while their dogs are barking, growling and acting horrible. Axl prances....he loves little white dogs.....really loves to play with them. Some people actually scoop their dogs up in their arms......like what.....Axl's going to eat them?
We take Axl to Starbucks and he lays down fully spread out and the kids pet him and crawl all over him (these are usually the tourists who miss their dogs at home!!)........great PR for the GSD...but I don't think it will change the opinion of the phoo-phoo dog owners.

one day when one of those ankle biters is going nuts over my Shep i'm going to pick him up like those people do with the ankle biters and say" daddy will save you" or "daddy won't let him bite you". or i'll say "please hold your dog he's scaring my dog". i can't wait to see their reactions.
