I have a 2-1/2 year old male gsd. I keep getting comments about him being small that I don't quite understand. He's 26-1/2" to the withers, 44" long and weighs around 80lbs. From all my research he's on the top end as far as height and length and 80lbs seemed like a solid healthy weight to me. I'd appreciate any input as to if he's actually all that small or if the colossal 100+lb. 30" tall gsd is really closer to the norm.

Nope, your guy is just right. The general public is not used to seeing appropriately sized dogs, and often think dogs that are a healthy weight are starved and any dog less than 100lbs is small for the breed. It’s just not true. Don’t worry about it.

Hello and welcome. Your boy sounds like he's the right size. I think the standard calls for a top height of 26 inches so your boy sounds like he's even slightly taller than the standard. Ignore the people. :)
