Hi All,

I'm new to posting in the forums but have been creeping around the posts for a while now. I will say thank you all for all the great info! The forum has helped me get through 4 amazing years with my GSD and has made them amazing. Now for the unfortunate part.....

My 4 yr old Tango (5 yrs on 10/13/18) has developed a limp in his hind left leg. This originally started in May of this year and as expected I freaked out and went to the Vet. It wasn't the first time a limp had occurred though it was previously attributed to a cut in his pad. The vet tried a drawer test in house but he wasn't having it and wouldn't lie down long enough. To note, this did NOT look to be due to any pain but more so due to the fact he hates being at the Vet. Either way the Vet was quick to say "he needs Xrays and surgery" and hand me a quote for $8k for everything and shove me out the door. Following this I began to call around to specialists and look into the surgery options eventually coming across a local Dr. who was friendly and spent more than 30 seconds looking at Tango. X-rays were scheduled ($850 for those) and they came back with no real evidence of a tear. Hips looked great as well so that ruled out any issue there. The next recommendation was steroid shots to try and assist in regaining stability. The first was done with a 2 week time span to let the results show (or not) and then a follow up shot of higher dose was done to try again. Both were "significantly less than what a dog his size can take" is what I was told. Anyway, this led us to the next step of surgery. I had done my research and was already cringing about the options between TPLO, TTA, and the tightrope procedure. Having had ACL and arthroscopic surgery myself I know the downtime, pain, and rehab needs so I was approaching this very carefully.

I was then given two options:
1: CCL Surgery (Tightrope): at $2500; including all meds, checkups post-op etc. No post-op therapy
2. TTA Surgery : $4500, all meds, checkups post-op etc. No post-op therapy.

To be clear, I pushed for the TTA. It's much more invasive I know but seemed more stable. Also, Tango floats around 85-95lbs naturally so it seems more stable for his size.
The surgeon however is recommending the CCL surgery. His logic is that there is likely a small tear but it's not super significant, the tightrope will reinforce the knee even for a dog of this weight. At this point I'm confused. My understanding was that ANY tightrope method will never get a dog to 100% (except small dogs) especially not a very active large breed GSD.

I'm slated to have his initial blood draw on Tuesday (10/16) for a possible tightrope surgery Wednesday (10/17) but now I'm really rethinking this. He definitely needs A surgery but which one. And to answer the obvious question, I have reached out for MANY second opinions. The VETS typically say they want to do their own Xrays and that's IF I'm lucky enough to even have them call me back. At this point I've chased about 15 different places.

Has anyone had a GSD of Tango's size have the tightrope procedure before? If so how did it go? How was recovery? Do you wish you had gone with TTA or TPLO instead? Any input is greatly appreciated and any suggestions that I should raise to the VET on Tuesday would be appreciated as well. Thank you all again for all the wisdom on these boards and god bless!

What surgical procedure did you end up going with and were you happy with the outcome? I believe my pup will need this surgery.
