I have two questions:

1) I am considering looking for a new vet in the Macomb County, Michigan, area or eastern Oakland County. My current vet is adequate but I would like a vet who is very familiar with the GSD breed and who other owners here may use. One of my concerns is that one of the vets at the practice I currently use recommended I neuter Hank before he turns 6 months, and now having read the many lengthy debates on this forum about neutering, I know that is considered far too early for a male GSD.

2) I have been told by others (not just the vet) that if I don't neuter him early that I will experience bad behaviors from him such as dominance, territory marking and him trying to escape or run away from the yard. I am undecided as when I should neuter (if ever), but I'm also worried now that people (who mean well but may not be right) have told me I'll have more trouble handling the dog if he's not neutered. He is already a handful, but he is also a puppy and we are also in obedience classes and I plan on continuing classes through advanced levels.

Thanks for any input!

I can't help with recommending a specific vet but you might try one that works on large animals as well as dogs and cats. I've found that they have more experience with large and working dogs and the prices are better than small animal clinics. You might email some gsd breeders in the area who they use.

Here is a link to wonderful veterinarian in Richmond. His clinic is AAHA accredited. He is also one of the few veterinarians that will do "special surgeries" such as cruciate repairs, luxated patellas, fracture repairs, etc, instead of sending you to a specialist. And yes, he has owned a German Shepherd. :)
