My dog,Cole,is a year and a half. He is very socailized, loves dogs, and listens well. He has been around kids all ages since he was a pup. Anyway about 4 days ago when it was hot (over 90) we went over to my wife's aunt and uncles house. They have a chocolate lab and the neigbors have a pit bull. My dog goes over everytime and plays with the pit they get along great.Later that night my kids had a few friends over to swim. A 10 and a 7 year old. Both kids have dogs to they know how to behave. Well I go inside to get a drink and I come out to hearing the 7 yr old say Cole bit his butt. I looked and there was fang marks there. I don't know why,he's great and was in the yard with this kid for hours. He was hot and started getting diarea,so I made him go into the air conditioning. Do you think he was hot and iratated?any thoughts? I hate feeling that I have a bad dog,I tried so hard to make sure this won't happen.

Dogs are like humans and can get testy when it is hot, they have had a long day, there is a lot of activity going on when they would just as soon settle down.

How old is Cole now and is he neutered?

If he had diahrrea then he wasn't feeling well. We as owners have to watch our dogs and make sure that when they are feeling off that they don't get pushed past their endurance.

Cole could have been in herding mode, Onyx did that Memorial day to a 17 yr old when the guys came into our backyard and were playing football. She had to get in on the game. She knows these guys, and is usually fine with them. He didn't get hurt, but did feel it. If a child is running in a yard, I would restrict your dogs activity with them until he learns or matures. Natural instinct to herd. I will keep Onyx with me if the guys decide to play running games in her territory again...

Hi am new to this, but I went through a similar act with my last GSD, my son was then 3yrs. old. Dakota was always allowed out in the yard loose (until....) the paperboy rode his bike past and he went on a chase. Caught the boy on his leg with one of his teeth and the police were called. The paperboy was fine, his father actually was by our house playing with the same dog that bit his kid a week later to buy our dirtbike. But to continue, the boy was fine but I was not. I was afraid .... can I trust this dog with my son? I was still upset when the policeman came and I was talking to him and he kind of set my mind to ease a little. He had a GSD bitch at home and she was very ugly that week because of the heat. So to finally end this little novel, Dakota never bit anyone after that, I was sooooo glad I did not get rid of him in fear of him being bad. We just put him to peace last week after 12yrs.
