I've been trying to make friends with neighbors dog. He urinates on treats I toss over the fence….
Ok, I understand this may sound made up and I finally stumped the whole Internet. My neighbors have a German Shepherd named Shadow probably about 2.5 to 3 years old now. I "think" it's a male but I'm not sure because it squats to urinate. When I first met Shadow he was very aggressive to me at his fence line barking nonstop at my slightest activity. I asked my neighbor if I could toss him some Milkbone cookies to him in an effort to make friends with him. At first he ate them but was still aggressive, jumping and barking but not growling. I have made progress with Shadow, by talking to him when he barks at the any sound I make on my property. I think he is used to my voice and that I am not a threat. I've made so much progress that when he starts barking at my mere footsteps, and I sush him verbally, he stops barking even if he can't see me. He did not do that before. Now it's only when I am weeding near the fence that he goes berserk. But even then, he will eventually calm down if I am there for a while and I calmly and assertively keep asking him to calm down. Abut 2 months ago, I tossed him a milkbone treat over the fence and to my surprise, he chased it down, sniffed it, then squatted over it and urinated on it and then left it alone. And, he does it every time now. I'm going to try another kind of treat but what do you guys think about this behavior? I asked my neighbor if I could toss over some new tennis balls, and they said yes. So, Shadow likes the three tennis balls I gave him. I think about $1.98 at WalMart. I wouldn't say he loves them but he does chase them when I throw them and he picks them up in his mouth. My neighbor will throw them back over the fence now and then and then I throw them back to shadow. He doesn't bark at me when I have a tennis ball in my hand but his body language is not one of us being friends yet.

It could be the fence. My dogs would bark at the neighbor across the fence. Not aggressively but more of a "we see you" bark. If we went to her yard, dogs in leash, they were cool and calm.
Kudos on working with your neighbor and trying to puzzle this out. One note, tennis backs can be dangerous. Large Kong balls are safer. Perhaps your neighbor can pick up a couple.

If you want to make friends with the dog, why not ask to go for a walk with the neighbor with him instead of chucking balls and treats over the fence? I understand the purpose - nobody wants to be charged and barked at everytime they walk into their yard. Another option is to put up a fence he can't see thru.
Thanks Jax08 - I like that idea and I would love to do that. A privacy fence is a good idea too. I have a partial privacy fence up, it works and plan to extend it more down the fence line. My neighbor never walks the dog and the road out front of our houses is very dangerous (traffic wise).

Have you tried upping your treat game? I've been using chopped up hot dogs and they store well in the fridge. My dog seems to like them even more when they are dried out.
I've been considering it. Hot dogs are a really good idea, thanks for the idea. Is there any way possible that urinating on the cookie I tossed to him could actually be a form of communication of his dissatisfaction? That would be a new one...

My neighbor gave my big-boy some steak over the fence on his 7th birthday. He took it but was suspicious. "Why are you giving me this food?"
I am considering upping my game on the treat front. It might answer my original question of why he did what he did. If fact, now I am really encouraged to do it to see how he reacts. Do you guys want me to post my observations?

I laughed that he urinated on the Milkbone but I'm glad you asked first!
I knew someone was going to find it funny. I find it very entertaining too. Being there the second and third time he did it was really messing with my head. I'm retired from the Information Technology field, and I never fail to try to analyze something until it's resolved even if it takes many years.

A lot of us don’t want strangers feeding our dogs. Dogs have been poisoned by food thrown over a fence. Natural suspicion is a good thing. Eventually he should be used to you anyway and stop barking. My dogs bark at strangers in the yards next to us but not at the people who live there. They got used to their sounds and smells. I also agree, no tennis balls! They are dangerous as a choking hazard but also one of my dogs wore all the tips off his teeth in tennis balls.

I do think it is amusing, as a human, that he peed on the milk bone. I would also like to see how you progress. But as you offer treats it should be done with the help of the owner. As I did with my boy's steak treat, she gave me the treat and I then gave it to my dog.
Some day this might help another person with a noisy GSD neighbor.

Sounds like a bored dog, left on it's own in his backyard. Maybe invite the neighbor on a walk and see if you can motivate him to play with him? He is wasting a brilliant mind.
Or teach/have the dog sit before you give a treat. It's almost incompatible with barking
Hey wolfy dog, it's interesting that you said that. They must have taught him to sit because when I gave him the first treats last year, I stated to tell him to sit before I gave him the treat. He would sit but he didn't really seem happy about it. I think he liked those treats but not the new ones I bought. I'm going to try some better treats.

Going to tell you a funny story about a milk bone type treat. When Dave Nichol was president of Loblaws grocery stores here in Canada, he used to push President's Choice brand dog treats, and say how much his dog LOVED them. So, someone gave me a box of them for Lili, my first GSD. Now, Lili was a bit of a picky eater. When I offered her the bone-shaped biscuit, she took it rather reluctantly. It was like "I'm just doing this to be polite." She then dropped it on the floor, sniffed it, picked it up, dropped it again. She then picked it up and headed for the back door. I let her outside, and she proceeded to BURY it in the garden! 🤣

I nearly wrote a letter to Dave to tell him my dog REALLY didn't care for his treats!

So, maybe your neighbour's dog feels the same way about the ones you're offering him...LOL!
