I have 2 GSD,s both girls totally different in sizes and build. My younger girl Harley is not yet 2 . She has started having real difficulty to stand up using her rear legs. Now she doesn't cry or whimper as if she is in pain , and once she starts moving around any limp goes away. I did take her to the vet and he saw how she got up and watched her walk . All he said is its probably arthritis and gave her some pain pills. Does the glucosamine chondroitin stuff really help ? Harley's been taking it daily for about 2 months now and I don't see any improvement . He did say she should lose about 6 pounds . Any advice will be appreciated. Harley came to me sort of as a rescue , she had 2 previous families that could not keep her . This was all by the time she was 4 months old . So I don't have any family history.

Do you have any pictures? Did anything happen that might have hurt her? How much and what type of exercise has she been getting? How long ago did you notice trouble getting up?

Loosing weight helps not to put so much stress on the joints , trimmed nails to so she can get some traction if she is lying on a hard surface,a a throw rug that does not slide would help. If the vet feels it is arthritis at two years old and did not offer to do any blood work - to check for Tick borne diseases or xrays. I would go see another vet. One that is comfortable with gsds. Lymes disease and other tick diseases can cause issues with joints and neurological issues.
