How closely do GSD/Chow mixes resemble GSDs and how do they differ from their Chow parent?

Here is one mix that could be mistaken for a purebred GSD:

LIke most mixes, I think it would depend on what characteristics are inherited - so the dog may have more of a gsd looks but more of the chow nature or look more like a chow but have the gsd nature. I think one couldn't be sure - it may be a great dog having the best of both breeds or the worst.

Why would anyone deliberately cross a GSD with a Chow? Sounds like a recipe for potential trouble.
