I went for a second opinion and x-rays without sedation (I think I already posted that). I called the ortho guy at Gracie's vet - couldn't get past the office manager. They still want to do x-rays under sedation. See, Gracie's vet did her OFA prelims - the positioning was horrible so I refuse to even post them unless you are desperate to see them. They said that even though I have x-rays of her knee, they want to check her hip. Her prelim report came back with sublaxtion written in. They haven't seen her 2 year old x-rays and I told them I'd bring them along with the knee x-rays. Well, her 2 year old OFA's are much better, went to someone who specializes in doing them. The same person x-rayed her knees. She passed OFA with no mention of subluxation. Does anyone know about this? I think it is truly just her knee (cruciate ligament - crainal drawer test was positive). A nagging thumping is happening on the back of my brain saying they are just trying to get more money out of me. If they INSIST on her hips being done again, I will have it done where her OFAs were done! Her are her 2 year old hip x-rays. You tell me.

I can't find it either....strange. Anyway, when I was sick with pneumonia (end of April) I noticed Gracie was favoring her left hind paw - toe touching or holding it up completely. I drug myself out of bed a few days later and her vet said he saw nothing wrong. Two weeks later while it was still like that, and her trainer said there was definitely a problem, we went back. He palpated her LH leg and she screamed in pain. He said luxating patella, cruciate tear or hip problem (based on her 8 month old prelims). Put her on HIGH dose of rimadyl, said to rest her and see the ortho guy/practice owner to have x-rays done under sedation -- without this guy seeing her first. Did blood work that came back normal. I asked what the tick panel showed "Oh you wanted that run too?" Well, DUH - joint pain isn't it the first thing to check?!!! It too all came back normal.

I was not satisfied with that and I took her for a second opinion where I had her 2 year old OFA's done. The 2 vets and the lead tech (guy who does the OFA's) all palpated the knee, felt it was a partial cruciate tear - one vet even said it might not be a tear. Reduced her to 50 mg rimadyl 2x/day and rest. She has been doing great. We haven't been to training in a few weeks.

I called her vet's office to talk to the ortho guy - couldn't get past the office manager - who said she looked at Gracie's chart and they want to look at her hip as well as her knee. I told her I had her knee x-rayed and had her 2 year OFA's which I'd bring. Could I just get an appointment with the ortho guy/practice owner. No, drop her off, no food after 8PM. He'll do the x-rays under sedation then call you.

ABSOLUTELY NOT - with her SIBO she'll be vomiting non-stop with no food in her stomach - the office manager didn't have an answer for that.

I left a message for Gracie's primary vet that I wanted to wait a few more weeks and could I just see the ortho guy. No one has called me back.

I think that brings you up do date, Elsie.

thanks for the update.

i wouldn't want to leave her there, either.

dh does not trust our vet at all!
seems everything requires sedation, and being dropped off for the day. he thinks they do nasty experiments on him. i don't know if he's a bit extreme, but i do know that something horrible must have happened to him because of the way he behaves when we go there.

i hope you can have her evaluated without sedation...

Oh gosh I did not realize she was injured! I don't remember seeing a post. Her hips look pretty okay to me. You may be right about the almighty dollar and the vet wanting to do things that are not needed.

Hope the wee one is okay....

Jen,
I just came across this thread. So sorry to hear about Gracies injury but also glad to hear she is feeling better. Hopefully rest will continue help the injury. I too have a great vet , but she is in the Tom's River area....if down the road you are looking for one.

Hope Gracie continues to improve.
