Oh my boy, since I brought you back from the man who named you Baily, you were such a good boy. I feel so bad that you had to go the way you did. When I was passing out the pigs' ears, I didn't think that much when you wouldn't take yours. So I went and gave the others theirs and came back to you. I saw you trying to barf. But the vet said yesterday that might happen, if so, just don't give you the keto-stuff. I made a note in my head not to give it to you. I told you I wouldn't give it to you. You barfed that white foamy stuff. I picked it up with the pooper scooper, hoping that would make you feel better. It did not. You were hunched up. You were trying to barf. You barfed this stuff and barfed this stuff.

It looked like the moose with the keto stuff in it. I wondered if you licked it off where I put it on you yesterday. But it looked like bloat. I called the vet and couldn't get through. So I took you hours away. I am sorry that it hurt so much to put you in the car. I am sorry the ride was so long and painful. I am sorry they took you in the back for an x-ray and kept you back there so long without me. I am sorry that it was bloat. I am sorry that I chose not to do a surgery. The vet said that it was bloat with torsion and it would probably mean the spleen would have to be taken. I wanted the pain to go away. You had already lost 15 pounds, from something. I was hoping you would rally. It just wasn't meant to be this time. I let them give you the juice so the pain would go away.

I think I did the right thing. The vet said it was. The girls at the desk said it was. It feels so bad though. I let you get so thin, and your coat to get bad, before making the appointment for you, and then I had to wait until Saturday. This was the third time you have lost weight like that. You were dropping weight before I went in the hospital. The bloating was probably unrelated, but I feel so bad that your last few months were sick months where you didn't want to eat.

I am glad your girls got to see you on Mother's Day. They loved you so, and you always loved them. I think your favorite thing was to sit between them as I drove them this way or that. They and you were special to each other. Can't take that away. Oh Cuji-Poojie what will I do with my big little boy? I have heard of bloat, now I know what it looks like. I don't see what I could do different. I wish I could have stopped the pain sooner. I am so sorry my boy. Run free.

Selzer, I'm also almost an hour from a 24 hr emergency vet. My regular vet is about 25 minutes away but is not available for after hour emergencies. I saw a bloat kit like this at a dog show two weeks ago, but didn't buy one. I'm not sure how one person could do much on their own.

You made the only decision possible. At his age even if you had been in an ER vet when it happened, they would not have done anything. The same thing happened to my most recent previous male who died on the way to the vet. They said they would have helped him pass quickly but would not have even attempted surgery with an older dog who had compromised health. They also told me bloat may have been a symptom of a different illness that would have been the end for him anyway. They suspected a type of cancer. Either way, the surgery is very expensive and if the prognosis is that bad, it’s not worth the added risk to the dog

I'm so sorry Sue. No point in beating yourself up. You did the best for your boy and made the toughest decision.

My vet is only 5 minutes away, but we were in the middle of an ice storm when Carly bloated. I called and they said he was iced in, out in the country. No vet.

I had to thaw my car out and drive what would normally only take about 15 minutes to the nearest ER vet. It took much longer because the roads were a sheet of ice. By the time we got there, and they x-rayed her, they said it was too late for the surgery. I said goodbye, and then we let her go.

Of all days to bloat, it had to have been during a stupid ice storm. Some things we just can’t control. I’m so sorry for your loss, Sue.

Wow, I have never considered trying to unbloat my dog on my own. Even my dog might try to eat me if I put a tube down his throat when he was in so much pain. And how would you know if the stomach totally turned over like that. I mean, I have heard of people using some form of gas-x to relieve bloating, but I'm no slouch, but I am a total novice and dealing with life threatening problems like this. Wow, it's like my mom asking if I can perform a C-section on my dogs now that I have watched Dr. Hutchison do one. I'm like, "No. I don't have anesthesia, I don't have stuff to sew them up with. I couldn't do that."

I keep gas-x on hand. My 12 year old goes through bouts of being gassy, usually 2 or 3 days in a row, then nothing for weeks. When he is gassy like that I give him some gas-x.

I remember many years ago (20+?) there was a bloat thing that had a long needle to insert to relieve the gas. Now, maybe in a dire live or die situation that might have been something to try - I don't know.

It's just so awful that bloat happens. And so so sorry it happened to Cujo2.
My dog show handler carries a bloat kit at all times, and has successfully used it.

I am so sorry, selzer. It is so unfair - when it rains it pours. You gave him a good home and a wonderful life. You did your best for him. That’s all we can ever do. Run free sweet Cujo2.

I am really scared of bloat. Buffy is getting a pexy when she goes in for her spay. I don’t trust that I would be able to recognize the warning signs in time.
