I'd call it alertness yet. My former Border did the same since the same age, but she is the most social creature in the world, everybody is her best friend. She could bark at the sound of people in the corridor of my floor, but if a burglar entered to apartment she would invite him to have some tea and cookies.

Dieter has started doing this as well, but just recently, so it took him a lot longer. He thinks everyone is his friend too, but I think that one big bark he lets out when he sees someone coming up the drive, or hears someone at the door would be a good deterrant

at 10 weeks old, he is definitely not being protective, he is a baby. he may be afraid of the noise from the semi and your neighbor. have you been busy socializing him from the day you got him?? make sure to socialize him like crazy, you do not want him to keep these fears. take him to meet lots of people , all kinds of people, little kids, old people, people with hats and sunglasses, people on crutches and in wheelchairs and get him used to loud noises.
