I found out today that my 1.5 year old German Shepherd/American Bulldog Ellie needs to have surgery and we have two options FHO or THP. I've been trying to weigh the pros and cons of each surgery will be best for her but I would love to hear everyones opinions of what their experiences were with the procedures.

Here's a little bit of background on Ellie:
-She is 90 pounds
-She is year and half
-She is very active and attends doggy daycare 5 days a week
-Her "sister" Maya is a pit/husky and they wrestle/run daily
-We know every little about her background only knowing her mom was a german shepherd and her father was American Bulldog
-She struggles to get in the car and needs assistance 80% of the time (I drive a Subaru Forester)

Here are my questions (For the specialist so if you have anymore I should add to my list please let me know):
-We are trying to figure out which procedure will be better for her long term since she is so young
-Which procedure will be better for her weight
-Which procedure is better for an active dog
-Which procedure has a better success rate

We have yet to speak to specialist because the news just came in today and we live in such a small town that our nearest specialist will be a couple hours away and we are waiting for the referral.

She is a beauty, you must love her very much. Where are you located? Maybe someone here knows of great specialists in your area. Could not hurt to get multiple opinions. I do know of dogs who received total hip replacements and are better than new. Aside from that I do not know much about it. Good luck!

My Rudy had a THR at eighteen months. It was wonderful and never gave him a problem. That was years ago and they’ve made improvements since.
He had severe HD in both hips but we only did one hip. The surgeon said if he ever needs a second surgery he would do an FHO because he only really needed one solid hip. He never needed it.
Good luck!
